VB Week that Was 2010 #12: Part 3: Weekly Awards

volleyballThis is the third part to the VB Week That Was #12----Weekly Awards

just a note----to be eligible for the teams I needed to see/chart the teams & players. That meant two teams from every class didn't make the cut, plus I didn't see any consolation, 3rd place type games.

Lakeville North gets the honor for the third time and the second straight week----and for good reason. The Panthers swept through the entire AAA field without losing a set. WDC did the same, but LN's margins of victory were 31 and 32 points in the two games I charted leaving no doubt in anyone's mind who was tops. LN had a First Serve Side out % of .683 tops of all classes. LN doesn't beat them selves with foolish errors only gift wrapping 3 points per set. On top of that their defense is the strongest with only 11.5 points earned against them. Their highly anticipated match up with #2 Wayzata was tight in the first two sets until 12 and 11, but there was always a breaking point. After those ties LN outscored the Trojans 27-8. The third set was not as close as LN got off to a 4-0 and 11-4 start.

Freshman & future Gopher Taylr McNeil of Lakeville North came up big in the championship game with 27.5 earned points---27 of them kills (MSHSL stats). McNeil hit at a .568 clip in that game and broke the back of the Trojans with seven of those points in the 13-1 finish to set one. Taylr faced a triple block by Wayzata, but that didn't stop her. Her court awareness gave her options on each attempt. For the three matches in the week TMcN had 55 kills and a hitting % of .379.

Kellie McNeil of Lakeville North must need braces for her shelves with all the honors she picks up. This is her 4th setter of the week honors and she joins her sister and team in the weekly winner circle. The senior and future Gopher added to her totals with a state title and all tournament selection. Kellie averaged 10.9 assists per set and her team hit a collective .318 for the week, far and away the best totals for the week.

Kalyn Petes of Wabasha-Kellogg gets the honor despite not being named to the all tournament team. Petes delivered balls on a dime to setter Kalyn Biever. For the week Petes averaged 6.9 digs per set and, by spearheading the defense, held WK opponents to a .097 hitting %.
