Badminton Out & About: Prairie Seeds vs Hiawatha Collegiate 4.10.2017

birdiePRAIRIE SEEDS 6, HIAWATHA COLLEGIATE 1

I hit the Twin Cities Athletic Conference today with a battle of the Wolves. The

Lycans (not listed in the dictionary, but for Prairie Seeds a wolf, not a werewolf) and the Wolves of badminton newcomer Hiawatha Collegiate battled with host Prairie Seeds Academy coming away with a 6-1 win. HC is a two year old school in south Minneapolis just west of Cedar on 17th and 46th. HC has two classes in their building at the moment (freshman 2020 and sophomores 2019). Next year they will be at three classes. PS is now a veteran program. Their school is on the south end in Brooklyn Park. Their home gym has three courts available.  Both teams are part of the five team TCAC, which is made up of charter schools. HC is going through the learning curve that all newcomer charter schools have gone through in the past. This was only their second contest of the year and one thing they learned is singles and doubles players are separate entities. Two players did double duty today playing singles and doubles at one point for varsity. As for the match itself, the margins were big in singles with no HC player reaching double digits. The Wolves did pick up their first win as a program at third doubles.

I now have nine teams left to see---two more in the TCAC, three in St. Paul, and four in Minneapolis.

FIRST SINGLES

yer YANG 2, merari SANCHEZ 0
(21-3, 21*-1)

Yer Yang sided out all five times against Merari Sanchez in a convincing two set win. The asterisk above indicates I only charted 20 in that set. Yang had a couple of monster runs---10 in the first set, 19 in the second. Most of the rallies went with a three stroke pattern: a deep serve by Yang; an attempted clear by Sanchez that didn’t get to the back line, and then a smash by Yang. Yang totaled 16 smashes on the match, half of her winners.
