SECTION 1AAA SEMIS<\/strong><\/p>\n

There was not a lot of action in section play due to Halloween onWednesday, but section 1AAA wrapped up their semis with one team surviving a scare. #2 Lakeville South survived to face neighbor Lakeville North on Saturday in a rubber match. Both teams have won going the distance, LS in the regular season conference match up in five, LN in a tournament format in three. Both of the Lakeville victims reside in the Big 9. Rochester Century had one set where they gave the Panthers a fright. The Raiders of Northfield saw a 2-0 lead evaporate.<\/p>\n

LAKEVILLE NORTH 3, ROCHESTER CENTURY 0<\/strong>
\n(25-12, 25-23, 25-16)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The defending section and AAA champ LN Panthers had two relatively uneventful wins sandwiching a nail-biter. In set two the RC Panthers pulled in front 23-22, the fourth lead change in the set on a kill by senior Nicole Lund. LN stopped the 3-1 run with a time out and finished off with the next three points capped by a block by Tori Thompson and Maddy Hornyak.<\/p>\n

For the match LN had 47 kills to 27 for RC. LN senior Elizabeth Juhnke delivered 16 kills to lead all players. Two other North players had double digit kills: Macy Winter and Thompson each had 10 kills. Winter led all LN players with five first swing kills. She was matched by RC\u2019s Amy Hargenrader with five first swing kills, but that was the extent of her scoring on attacks.<\/p>\n

LAKEVILLE SOUTH 3, NORTHFIELD 2<\/strong>
\n(26-28, 22-25, 25-18, 25-21, 15-13)<\/strong><\/p>\n

LS had their holidays confused. They were in a giving mode in the early portion of the match giving away 17 points due to errors in the first set loss to the Raiders.\u00a0 The Cougars led 15-7 which forced a Northfield time out. The Raiders rebounded with four straight points and were back in the game (15-11). LS added to their margin pulling out to a 21-15 lead. But five straight errors initiated with a serve that sailed deep followed by four straight hitting errors cut the lead to a thin 21-20 differential. After the side out, Northfield resumed their rally with two straight kills from Megan Reilly. LS held off set point twice. Then came four straight side outs. An over pass whiff hitting error followed by another LS hitting error gave the Raiders the two points needed for the first set win.<\/p>\n

LS did clean up some of their errors in set two, but still gave away 11 points, four on serving errors. Early LS led 10-6. Northfield grabbed their first lead at 14-13 on a kill by Reilly. After LS tied it at 15 the error avalanche began anew with three straight Cougar hitting errors. LS recovered with a run of four to inch ahead 19-18. LS had a 21-20 advantage. A first swing kill by Linnea Larson started the final 5-1 push by Northfield putting the #2 seed in the hole 2-0.<\/p>\n

LS cut their errors down to a manageable six and led the entire third set. There was a sequence of nine side outs with eight of them first terminations from 13-9 to 18-12 as both teams had their offenses clicking.<\/p>\n

It was LS\u2019s turn to rally in the fourth set. After racing out to a convincing 5-0 lead and forcing Northfield to call time it looked like it was going to be smooth sailing. But the errors returned with a vengeance. LS led 13-8 but a missed serve opened the door for a five more Northfield points. All told LS delivered five of those points on errors. After a side out Northfield tacked on three more points to lead 18-15 and forcing a second LS time out. With their backs against the wall LS responded with a side out kill on the first swing by Jasmine Mulvihill. Ties at 18, 19 followed. Then it was Northfield\u2019s turn to give away points. Two straight ball handling errors returned the lead to LS. A kill by Nicole Banitt forced Northfield to burn the second time out. After a side out, LS finished with three different players connecting on kills.<\/p>\n

The deciding fifth set had six ties, the last coming at 11 after a two point run by Northfield capped by a kill from Bronwyn Timperly. That prompted a LS time out and Carlee Gonzalez came up with a block\u00a0 to get the Cougars the finishing kick they needed. The game was still in doubt after three straight side outs. Northfield had a chance to tie, but their serve sailed deep and LS wiped their brow in relief happy to survive into November.<\/p>\n

I am now back on the trail. My team wrapped up their season on Tuesday with the most wins since I have been at Henry and with the most post season wins too.<\/p>\n
