The calendar changed from 2019 to 2020 this week and the new year, with its perfect vision, ushered in compelling down to the wire games. The trend actually started on Tuesday with the last contest of 2019 where Blaine edged Cambridge-Isanti that went down to the last possession. The next two games that initiated the new year had last second scores in back and forth games. In both of those games the non-winning team had the ball with a two point lead with slightly over a minute to go. In each case a three was attempted (in Friday\u2019s game two were attempted). Those shots never should have been launched. This brings up the explicit task of explaining to players what is desired down the stretch. Time and score matter. Late game situations matter. Everyone needs to be on the same page. These situations need to be rehearsed. The teams that are prepared will prevail.<\/p>\n

There is an old slogan that goes \u201cTeams rise to the occasion.\u201d This is false. Teams fall to their level of training. Execution matters. Of course, in a one possession game all eyes are drawn to end game situations and those moments get magnified 100 fold. But the whole game leads to this point. \u00a0Everything matters. You don\u2019t need corrective lenses to see that.<\/p>\n

The start of 2020 reminded me of a string of three games where I saw three game winning shots on three different days—–all ended with 3s. I don’t know what the odds are for that, but I failed to buy a lottery ticket that week. The winners in that string were Buffalo Lake-Hector (Stewart wasn’t involved then); St. Francis, and Moorhead.<\/p>\n

QUEST FOR 100<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

The top 10 have now been eliminated. There are 34 teams to go, 56 potential dates before playoffs. However there will only be one day most weeks with opportunities to cross off more than one game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The days of the unbeaten now number a Big 10. The narrowest call came with Minneota in A with a one point win over Brooten-Belgrade-Elrosa perhaps the most dangerous team with a losing record in A at 4-6. Five of those losses are to AA teams.<\/p>\n
