Poe was one of two senior Como players honored prior to the match. One glaring observation on the stat line was the big advantage in winners for Nag Poe 36-21. But Poe also led in errors 35-18. Today the advantage rested with the player on the wall. Both Jeong-McDonell and Poe had their set wins on that wall. In the first set JMD utilized nine points on either deep serves or clears that sailed too far. The first break for JMD came with a run of four to pull in front 10-7 in set one. Poe made a late charge with a run of three to close to 19-17. But the fourth missed serve of that set ended the threat.

With the change of courts in set two Poe strung together runs on each of her first three serves and led 12-4. Without the wall to guide her JMD kept the deeper serves in play. In the deciding set JMD scored her first three points on missed Poe serves. That third miss led to the first run in the final frame as JMD tacked on three more points. The rallies lasted much longer in the third set. JMD typically won those long rallies (9-5 in that set including a marathon 18 stroke missed slam opportunity for Poe to make it 10-5 JMD. Eventually both players settled into a side out routine with 11 straight exchanges—–usually completed on the second stroke. JMD held the advantage going into that segment and then broke the spell by scoring on her 11th service of the set. The last four points for JMD came on Poe gifts.

Category

JEONG-MCDONELL

<td
