In the only game in town, Edina, for the third straight day, faced off, this time against second year program North St. Paul. And despite the Polar nature of the weather outside the Hornets swept the match at home without losing a set. Seven of the 14 sets were decided by ten points or more, four of those on the doubles side. There was only one two point differential and that came in the first set at third singles when Hazel Dang edged Isabelle by 21-19. The action at singles was closer than doubles 8.6 differential to 10.7.

SINGLES
1. Betsy Lundberg, E def Sheng 21-14, 21-15
2. As has been the case most of the week, a dominant side out game helped in the victory. Lundberg checked in with 68% while only allowing five of Sheng’s services to generate any traction. That carried over to service points, won easily by Lundberg 23-9. What was peculiar about this match was Sheng won the winner category narrowly 21-19. Lundberg limited her errors in a major way only giving away eight while Sheng had 23. Eight of those errors by Sheng came on the second stroke, four of which were clear attempts that sailed long. Sheng’s best scoring winner today was the smash with seven while Lundberg utilized the soft drive for five winners. Lundberg had a large advantage on odd stroke winners/errors 11-4 while Sheng was 6-11. That flipped when it came to even stroke winners with Sheng up 15-12 to 8-4 for Lundberg. So even there Lundberg was a plus four.

Despite winning the flip of the bird, Sheng opted to choose the side and chose the side away from the bleachers allowing Lundberg to open with service. On her second service she ran off five straight points to lead 6-1. The soft drive opened that drive with two straight points, one on the side out on two strokes, the next on a three stroke. Lundberg then stopped Sheng on the Polar’s next service with a soft drive—that was three soft drives as winners in the first seven points. Lundberg only added two more the rest of the match. Sheng strung together a run of three followed by a run of four on services three aand four to close the gap to 10-9. Six of the seven points in that string were winners, two of which lasted 11 strokes. Sheng also showcased her soft drive side with three winners in that swing. Lundberg’s next two services came on runs of three, but this time Sheng provided five of the points on errors. That made it 16-10. Lundberg’s side out game was in full force, closing the door on Sheng’s service five straight times.

Sheng notched the first run of the second set to pull ahead 6-4. It was to be her only string of three or more points in that set. Lundberg responded right away with her own run of three with two straight smashes to cap it (7-6). After that Lundberg never trailed. The Hornet’s last run of three ended the match started with the return of a two stroke soft drive to get the side out followed by a block point and then a clear attempt that sailed long.

Category

LUNDBERG

<td
