Larson also needed to rally back in the second set after holding a seven stroke lead (10-3) and then falling behind 17-14.

This match featured serves, both aces and errors. Short serves were the order of the day. Shayla utilized her short serve for four aces, but that also came at a cost with four errors that fell short. Larson also delivered four aces, in a variety of locations, with three errors.

This match got off to a fast start. How fast? Try no warmup. It was right into action. I missed the first point, therefore. I know it went for Larson, but no stroke count was provided. Larson set the tone with three straight runs on her serves building an 11-3 advantage, nine of those points came as winners: four coming on the third stroke. Shayla got her only run to cut the deficit to 11-7. All four points in the run came with two strokes or less. Larson added two more runs including the final four points to wrap up set one.

Set two featured more drama—and miscounting (by one). Again, Larson jumped off with two runs in her first three serves on the way to a 10-3 lead. She rattled off the first five points with two aces, one deep (and a swing and a miss), and one short in that sequence. After a bird sailed wide on a seven stroke clear Shayla turned the tables with a 13-2 run across three services. The first five points included back to back aces at points six and seven. A three stroke smash tied it at 11, one of two on the day for Shayla. Another five point run again had two aces or a near ace (Larson was tagged with a net error on the second). An eleven stroke clear gave Shayla her biggest lead at 16-12. By that time the called score indicated 16-11. Larson roared back with seven straight points to go in front (in my count) 21-17. Of those seven points five came on Shayla hitting errors, three of them on the two stroke. Shayla held off match point one before a four stroke drive ended it.

Category

<td
