ROOSEVELT 6-1×2 DOUBLE HEADER<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was a loooong day at Roosevelt Monday afternoon into evening watching the Teddies clinch the Minneapolis title with a win over second place Henry 6-1, followed up by a non-conference match up with Hiawatha Collegiate, also 6-1. The Henry match was scheduled for 4. That started close enough to the time slot and finished in plenty of time for the next match. The Hiawatha match was to begin at 6. The Wolves showed up at 6. Their racquets did not. They showed up 40 or so minutes later. Add in warm up and match (the first singles went over thirty minutes), and I departed the Jack Wells Gymnasium around 7:30 and did not arrive home until 8 pm.<\/p>\n

Roosevelt readjusted their line up for the second contest resting some players and giving opportunities for others at the higher positions. That was the case at first singles. Ella H handled the job for the Teddies in the Henry contest, Sophia LaBrie took the responsibility in the Hiawatha Collegiate match. She was at third singles in the Henry match.<\/p>\n

The reason for this viewing was because it was the final regular season match up for Hiawatha Collegiate. I have officially seen all 28 teams that have played a badminton match this year.<\/p>\n

I published the box scores with the other Monday matches earlier. In this edition you will get the two singles matches.<\/p>\n

FIRST SINGLES <\/strong><\/p>\n

MATCH 1
\nELLA H 2, SHAYLA 0 <\/strong>(21-5, 21-12)<\/p>\n

Ella H rolled to the win taking advantage of 26 errors on Shayla\u2019s part. The first set was over quickly in the first set when Ella had a massive 14 point avalanche of points on her first service. She started off trailing 1-0, her only deficit of the match. In the 14 point run Shayla delivered seven errors including five straight of which the initial four were net errors, the last three on the fourth stroke. In set two it was closer but still Ella was able to generate five runs in her eight service chances, including three of the first four. By that stage she enjoyed an 11-6 lead. Shayla\u2019s only run of the match came on her second service in set two and that tied it up at four.<\/p>\n

It is interesting to note that Ella did not have a single even stroke winner in the match.<\/p>\n

MATCH 2
\nANALI 2, SOPHIA LA BRIE 1 <\/strong>(24-22, 17-21, 21-16)<\/p>\n

Hiawatha Collegiate\u2019s Anali garnered her school\u2019s first singles win of the year and the only flight win in the Roosevelt match late Monday. This match featured the only tight contest as measured by point spread in the entire Teddie v Wolves match. Twice the spread was two points, the first set going extra points. The story of this match was the glut of service errors provided by LaBrie. A whopping 17 points ended up for Anali in this manner—-27% of her point totals. And these were not hairline misses, but wide of wide. It shifted the outcome in the first set with seven misses, three of them on the initial serve. That squandered a huge 45-24 lead in winners. And for the first time I have been measuring this type of stat, the odd stroke winners (22-13) did not guarantee victory for LaBrie.<\/p>\n

The first run belonged to LaBrie right out of the gate with all winners. Anali matched that run with her own and then some. She tacked on six including two aces, both on fans. Anali maintained that margin and added to it out to 19-14 after her third run. With things looking bleak and with her back to the wall, LaBrie rallied. She enjoyed her own run of six to stand on the verge of victory 20-19. In that run was three straight aces, short variety. All were no gos by Anali. But things came to a screeching halt with her sixth missed serve of the set. She bounced back directly with a two stroke soft drive. Anali held off second match point with a 14 stroke drop. She had her first set point after a nine stroke smash. A six stroke clear tied it, but, you guessed it, the seventh missed serve derailed any momentum. Anali finished off the set with a three stroke drive to the right.<\/p>\n

Set two was tighter with only one run each by the players. Anali\u2019s first run of three put her up 10-8. LaBrie had the longest run of five and that gave her a 17-12 lead capped by two straight three stroke smashes to the right and then left. This time it was Anali that stopped any momentum with a missed serve to make it 20-17 LaBrie. LaBrie ended the set with a three stroke drive. LaBrie won the set despite another eight missed serves, this time four coming on the first chance.<\/p>\n

Anali took the final set thanks to holding LaBrie to zero runs while scoring two. Anali had nine winners in this set, one less than LaBrie. One thing that did get cleaned up was the missed serve total. LaBrie had a mild two missed serves in the deciding set. Interestingly Anali got the bird back seven of the twelve times on winners. That means she only added two on her serve. Anali\u2019s second run came just in time with the final three points of the day, the last two were four strokes that sailed wide.<\/p>\n
