The Governors had a strong 6-1 showing with Como Park’s Xee Lee spoiling thoughts of a sweep. As the singles matches went on, Johnson picked up steam with the differential in the first sets of the four matches only three. The difference in the second sets came in at 29 with three of the double-digit margins for Johnson happening there. Como had two sets in the first set that were decided by three or less. The only set to go extra points came in the first set at second singles where Savanna Yang secured a 24-22 win over Niko Solheid. Solheid was held to eight in the second set.

The Govs swept the doubles with the first sets across the three matches setting the tempo with a pair of double-digit gaps.

With the win Johnson moves to 3-2 in St. Paul, Como is now 3-3.

SINGLES

Xee Lee, CP def Ruth Thaw Gyi 21-11, 21-14

Savanna Yang, J def Niko Solheid 24-22, 21-8

Soua Xiong, J def Ta’Liyah McNeal 21-18, 21-10

Su Meh, J def Laila Diaz 21-13, 21-9

DOUBLES

Goldy / Dao, J def Lisa Truong / Michelle Vang 21-10, 21-13

Sammie / Anastasia, J def Daychia Her / Tha Blay Htoo 21-15, 21-13

Kathy / Angelina, J def Hser Eh Paw / Sher Sher 21-9, 21-13

BY THE NUMBERS
SINGLES
Matches: Johnson 3-1 .750
Games: Johnson 6-2 .750
points: Johnson 154-122 .558
Set 1 points: Johnson 77-74 .510
Set 2 points: Johnson 77-48 .616
decided by 10+: Johnson 3-1 .750
decided by 3-: Johnson 2-0 1.000
margin: Johnson 4.00
DOUBLES
Matches: Johnson 3-0 1.000
Games: Johnson 6-0 1.000
points: Johnson 126-73 .633
Set 1 points: Johnson 63-34 .649
Set 2 points: Johnson 63-39 .618
decided by 10+: Johnson 2-0 1.000
decided by 3-: none
margin: Johnson 8.833

FIRST SINGLES

Xee LEE 2, Ruth THAW GYI 0 (21-11, 21-14)

Como Park’s Xee Lee moved to 5-1 on the year with a sweep of Ruth Thaw Gyi, who is now 2-3 overall, 1-3 at first singles. Lee was in command of the bird dictating where it was going, preventing a run for Thaw Gyi until the closing moments of the second set. Lee led in winners 27-16 and odd stroke winners at 17-4. There was a balanced mix of winners with the soft drive leading the way with nine, six of those came on the two stroke. The other three were on the third.

The match started out with six straight side outs including the longest point of the day won by Lee—a twelve stroke back hand drive. Oddly enough Thaw Gyi was the first to break the routine with a three stroke clear and her only lead of the night at 4-3. But Lee prevented any sort of momentum to build. And Lee did build her own string of runs. She had three straight services where she got a run capped by a seven stroke run, the largest for any player all match to move from an 11-8 lead to being in the driver’s seat at 18-8.

Lee notched two runs to start the second set and established a 6-2 advantage. The side out trade off happened in the middle of this set with eight straight points see sawing back and forth. Still with the initial boost, Lee held sway 13-7. A four point run coming on Lee’s ninth service but her on the verge at 19-10. Until this point Thaw Gyi was shut out on runs. That changed with the score at 20-11. The Governor had a two stroke smash to get he bird back holding off the first match point. She then added a smash for the second hold. And forced a wide hitting error for the third. Lee ended the night with a four stroke cross court drop, her fifth of the match.

Category

<td
