Senior Samantha Wills of Visitation cracked the 2000 point level in a 77-13 win over Cooper.<\/p>\n

Junior Kaia Anderson of Perham made the 1000 point club in the win over Staples-Motley.<\/p>\n

Hayfield\/Schaeffer Academy coach Kasey Krekling joined the 200 win club after a 59-55 victory over Rushford-Peterson.<\/p>\n

ABOUT LAST NIGHT\u2026..DeLaSalle v Mahtomedi<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Last night I was on the Island to see a 4AAA match up between DeLaSalle and Mahtomedi, last year\u2019s finalists. There have been two coaching changes with Ana Garcia taking over at DLS from James Fasset and Aneshia Fisher now the third coach in three years for the Zephyrs. Both teams are ranked in the top ten and both teams were competitive early. Both teams are also dealing with injuries. The Zephyrs were without Sarah Poepard, and Delaney Dumermuth. DLS lost Madalyn Blaylark to an ACL earlier in the year and are awaiting Dilan Tubbs return. The #6 Islanders won 84-65.<\/p>\n

Both teams were hot to start the night but gradually DLS inched in front 23-17 with about seven minutes left in the half. After a three by Mahtomedi\u2019s Ella Frazier the Zephs moved in front 29-27 capping a 12-4 run in the space of three minutes. But then the Islanders reasserted themselves with a mega 16-5 run to finish the half up 43-34. The same scenario would play out in the second half. With eleven minutes left in the game the hosts led 56-42. The visitors stormed back into contention 61-57 three minutes later to trail 61-57. The game was still tantalizingly close within the threshold of clutch\/crunch time at 67-61 with five minutes left. Perhaps there was too much energy expended to get close, but the Mahtomedi gas tank was running low. DLS closed the last five minutes with a commanding 17-4 run. So in the last few minutes of each half (nine minutes total of game action) DLS won 29-8. The rest of the time Mahtomedi won 57-55.<\/p>\n

Rebounding was essential for DLS with a 35-23 advantage. Their offensive rebound rate was 40.7%; Mahtomedi\u2019s was only 22.6%. DLS was in the neighborhood of NBA teams holding their opponents down to that number. Also, turnovers were a factor. It was close with DLS forcing two more (26-24). It was the frequency. Mahtomedi turned it over every 12.31 touches: DLS every 14.05 touches. DLS improved their totals in the second half; Mahtomedi went backward. The Zephyrs played a box and one on Aneisha Scott. She scored 26 points, with 15 on free throws. But her game flow was not typical. Her teammates were also able to break free and shot 26\/44 from 2s for an extremely healthy 59.09. Some were chip shots, some second chancers. Scott edged out Mahtomedi\u2019s Anna Green 42-41 in the 41 Club race. Green edged Scott 27-26 in scoring. Scott had a teammate get to the 31 Club. Erianna Moeschter made it to 32 with 14 points along with 11 d stops and a stellar 7\/8 distribution mark. DLS had a 34\/57 or 59.65 set up for distribution rate; Mahtomedi was 47.37. Ella Frazier off the bench delivered 20 point and just missed the 31 club by one.<\/p>\n

As a team DLS had a 107.7 pp100 for the game, down from 119.4 at the break. Mahtomedi checked in with 84.6, also down from a first half 91.9. There were plenty of fouls with the visitors attempting to 27, the hosts 28. DLS was more consistent, and their bench delivered as well. Just starters were 57-45 for DLS with 101.8 to 76.3 pp100. The bench race also belonged to the Islanders 27-21 or 122.7 to 110.5. Most of that (ok 20 of the 21) came from Frazier.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t get any easier for Mahtomedi on Thursday when they take on now #3AAAA Eastview. DLS looks to be in front for the race for #1 seed in section 4AAA. Hill-Murray and Mahtomedi will have to battle it out for the right to host the other in what could be a semi match up.<\/p>\n
