The visitors made it rain 3s all night (14 times) as they corralled the Mustangs in Mounds View 66-42. Right from the start WBL found gold at the end of the rainbow connecting on three 3s to build a 15-4 lead with eleven minutes left in the first half prompting a time out from MV after four straight scores. Chloe Theissen had 8 of those points igniting the Bears surge. By half the visitors led 31-21. The first three WBL scores of the second half all came from behind the arc pushing their margin to 40-23. It never really improved for MV. At the widest it was 61-35.

Pace, Space, depth and above all shooting provided the clues to WBL’s victory. Eight different Bears found gold at the end of the rainbow with Theissen connecting four times. WBL found wide wide wide open players with the extra pass after probing the paint for the quick kick out or realizing the defense left an area exposed (usually the corner). WBL shot 14/34 for 41.7%. 63.6% of their total points came from deep. 59.6% of their shots came from long distance. WBL never really attacked the rim, only attempting three free throws all night, or 137.67 touches per free throw. WBL was not too shabby on 2s either going 11/23 or 47.8%. MV, by contrast, was only 24% in 2-land and 25% on 3s (5/20). Pace also favored WBL. They could adjust to fast or slow. They were 43% (10/23) on 3 touches or less compared to 25.9% (7/27). They were even better on longer possessions, or their defense threw a wrench into MV’s system. The Mustangs were only 15% (3/20) on seven or more touches while WBL checked in with 34.3% (12/35). Again, those possessions tended to be long range missiles, so 33% is doable. The bench helped WBL too. Starters won 49-28 with a pp100 of 104.3 to 63.6; the bench won 17-14 with an even better 121.4 pp100 to 77.8. Overall WBL was 108.2. MV 67.7. When you shoot good you look good. WBL shot very well.

14 seemed to be the ceiling for scoring Addison Post and Theissen for WBL reached that level. Nora Schmidt did the same for MV. No one made the 31 Club, but Post was the closest at 27.

THE DAY AHEAD

A big day Thursday with 110 contests on tap.
