AAA trailed all and did not get average over 50.

AA will not have all #1 seeds in the tournament. That was guaranteed on Thursday when both #2s (Minnewaska in the North; Fairmont in the south) advanced to the 3AA title game. What was strange was the margin in the Fairmont victory over #1 Jackson County Central—-near running time territory at 32 points. Waska won by six in a low scoring affair. The other three classes are safe for all #1s..but it is rare if all eight tournament teams are #1s.

As far as “will all teams be ranked in the polls” meaning the last poll. AAAA no—missing 4, 7. AAA no—-missing 3; AA no—missing 2, 8. A no—missing 3. Those are the ones guaranteed to be missing. More could fall in the coming days.

The biggest upset of the night—or at least the lowest seeded team to defeat a higher seed—was #12 Osakis in 6AA leaving #5 Legacy in the dust 60-41. Also worthy of an eyebrow raised came in 5AAA with #6 Fridley kenneling the Becker Bulldogs by a dozen. There were a two 9s over 8s, two 5s over 4s, and a 7 over 10.

The ranked average was still an elevated 68.73 last night despite the low score with Minnewaska & NLS (42-36). Take those two scores out of the equation and the ranked average pops to 75.33.

Here is a truism: scores are going to decline; possessions are going to decline as the tournaments continue. You will not see many if any 79 point margins in the coming days. Surviving teams generally handle the ball better and are more skilled in shooting than teams turning in uniforms. That means teams that can execute with seven or more touches per play are going to be successful. 35 seconds is not forever. Most teams play defense for eight seconds. If a team can be patient and get the ball where they want with who they want they will move on.

AAAA—not in action Thursday

AAA

5

#1 Monticello 71, #8 Zimmerman 40

#2 Totino-Grace 79, #7 Coon Rapids 49

#4 St. Francis 47, #5 Princeton 45

#6 Fridley 56, #3 Becker 44

8

#2 Fergus Falls 71, #7 St. Cloud 13

#3 Willmar 49, #6 Rocori 37

#4 Little Falls 58, #5 Detroit Lakes 37

AA

2

#1 Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 58, #9 St. Clair 42

#2 NREHG 75, #7 Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 42

#3 Tri-City United 76, #6 Belle Plaine 55

#4 Glencoe-Silver Lake 63, #5 Norwood-Young America 44

3N

#2 Minnewaska 42, #1 New London-Spicer 36

3S

#2 Fairmont 78, #1 Jackson County Central 46

4

#5 St. Paul Washington / Johnson 40, #12 Twin City Academy 31

#6 St. Croix Prep 61, #11 St. Paul Academy 20

#7 LILA #10 Columbia Heights

#8 Nova Classical #9 Concordia Academy

5

#5 Southwest Christian Chaska 57, #12 Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted 25

#6 Watertown-Mayer 63, #11 Rockford 49

#7 Dassel-Cokato 77, #10 Breck 52

#8 Holy Family 61, #9 Eagle Ridge Academy 37

6

#2 Royalton 66, #15 Mora 30

#3 Milaca 64, #14 Melrose 46

#4 Annandale 49, #13 St. Cloud Cathedral 25

#6 Spectrum 52, #11 Kimball 49

#7 Albany 58, #10 Pine City 41

#9 Foley 64, #8 Holdingford 53

#12 Osakis 60, #5 Legacy Christian 41

8

#3 Pelican Rapids 61, #14 Warroad 42

#4 Menahga 75, #13 Roseau 32

#5 East Grand Forks 73, #12 Crookston 46

#6 Perham 61, #11 Park Rapids 49

#8 Hawley 59, #9 Wadena-Deer Creek 46

#10 Frazee 57, #7 Thief River Falls 44

A

2

#1 Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 78, #9 United South Central 45

#2 BOLD 62 #7 Cedar Mountain 55

#3 Sleepy Eye 61, #6 Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 47

#4 Martin County West 47, #5 Springfield 40

4

#5 Lester Prairie 84, #12 Trinity 28

#6 PACT 98,#11 Hope Academy 65

#7 New Life Academy 64, #10 Heritage Christian 30

#9 Avail Academy 50, #8 Liberty Classical 42

5E

#1 Braham 82, #8 East Central 20

#2 Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 75, #7 Mille Lacs 33

#3 Upsala 57, #6 Maple Lake 45

#5 Swanville 76, #4 Ogilvie 72

5W

#1 Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 76, #8 Verndale 29

#2 Bertha-Hewitt 52, #7 Browerville 31

#3 Pine River-Backus 88, #6 Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 31

#5 Sebeka 74, #4 Nevis 60

6N

#1 Hillcrest Lutheran 67, #8 Battle Lake 32

#2 Underwood 61, #7 Rothsay 41

#3 New York Mills 69, #6 Ada-Borup West 44

#4 Park Christian 79, #5 Lake Park-Audubon 47

6S

#1 Breckenridge 81, #8 Benson 36

#2 West Central 63, #7 Brandon-Evansville 49

#3 Hancock 83, #6 Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley 42

#4 Wheaton/Herman-Norcross 57, #5 Parkers Prairie 54

7

#1 Mountain Iron-Buhl 89, #16 Cook County 10

#2 Cromwell-Wright 73, #15 Silver Bay 20

#3 Bigfork 72, #14 Carlton/Wrenshall 29

#4 Floodwood 72, #13 Littlefork-Big Falls 54

#5 Chisholm 71, #12 North Woods 48

#6 Ely 67, #11 South Ridge 38

#7 Cherry 61, #10 McGregor 38

#8 Hill City/ Northland 47, #9 Deer River 27

8E

#1 Northome/Kelliher 80, #8 Lake of the Woods 25

#2 Cass Lake-Bena 79, #7 Clearbrook-Gonvick 29

#3 Fosston 43, #6 Bagley 39

#4 Mahnomen/Waubun 58, #5 Blackduck 37

8W

#1 Kittson County Central 67, #9 Goodridge/Grygla-Gatzke 46

#2 Warren-Alvarado-Oslo 57, #7 Stephen Argyle 39

#3 EGF Sacred Heart 56, #6 Fertile-Beltrami 44

#4 Badger / Greenbush-Middle River 59, #5 Northern 45

MILESTONES—3, 2, 1

Cass Lake-Bena senior Gabrielle Fineday made it to the 3000 point level in the 79-29 win over Clearbrook-Gonvick.

Martin County West senior Emily Anderson is now at 2000 points after the 47-40 win over Springfield.

Kelliher-Northome junior Alli Lundin joined the 1000 point club with 9 in the 80-25 victory over Lake of the Woods.
