SAINT PAUL DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP<\/strong><\/p>\n

Finally!! This is now ready for publication. First I have to watch the film\/tape and chart. Then I need to tabulate all the results. Time constraints get in the way. I have other obligations. At any rate the Highland Park duo of Alice Verbrugge & Violet Solem Valentine defeated Asta Ket & Gaolee Yang in three sets. This was the first doubles city title of any kind for the Scots, who usually are a force in singles.<\/p>\n

The Cougar pair won the first set, but the momentum shifted strongly to the Scot side of the net the rest of the match. HP led 19-15 late in the first set when, on Gaolee Yang\u2019s service CP put together a run of five to lead 20-19. HP held off set point once, but CP got the bird back and finished off the first\u00a0 set with a Yang drive on the fifth stroke.<\/p>\n

Set two was tight out to 13-11 with HP holding the upper hand. And then the dam burst when they scored the last eight points on VSV\u2019s serve. AV had four winners in that sequence.<\/p>\n

Set three saw VSV get two runs on her first two services and as a result a healthy 11-2 lead. It was AV that strung out five straight late in that set for the Scots to stand on the verge at 20-9. CP held off the inevitable match point once before VSV ended the title drought for HP with an eight stroke smash.<\/p>\n
