Both schools have a strong volleyball presence, but Centennial’s athletes are more siloed. There is a cross-over in Delano. The Tigers overcame an early struggle, ramped up their defensive pressure and started connecting on the long ball in a convincing 74-51 win spoiling the coaching debut of Jason Wirtz. Interestingly Delano coach Scott Antl was not on the bench for the varsity game. Antl was in the building earlier and he was once a Centennial assistant back in the late 2000s.

The Delano starters scored 70 of their points with Abbie Pietila scoring a game high 22. She also led all players getting into the 31 Club—I mean the 41 Club—right on at 41. She had a triple double with 10 d stops along with twelve distributions on 26 attempts. She also nailed three 3s on the night. Joining the 31 Club was Addie Iversen with one to spare at 32.

Centennial did have a lead at 20-13 early in the first half. Their first lead came at 13-10 after a three by #11. Delano tied and the Cougars rattled off seven unanswered points. But then a disastrous stretch which saw the hosts go on a twelve-possession drought in which there were seven straight possessions ending in a turnover without a shot being attempted sealed their fate. In that time Delano rattled off 15 straight to lead 28-20. At half it was 40-27 and the needle did not move much in the second half.

Neither team was smoking hot, but Delano’s starters were effective as a unit with a 106.1 pp100 besting their team total of 89.2. Centennial’s starters could only muster 57.1 with their bench pushing that total up slightly to 61.4.

Delano overwhelmed Centennial at the line with 31-12 attempts. The Tigers made 22 free throws, ten more than the Cougars attempted. Delano also hit on eight 3s. The hit for four in a five-possession stretch in the second half which stretched their lead to 58-35.

The Tigers will next be playing at the Tip Off Classic on Saturday at Southwest Christian. Delano is the #7 rated AAA team, but in the brutal section 6AAA they are third behind three-time defending champion Benilde-St. Margaret’s and Orono.

DAY AHEAD

There are 75 games on tap.
