That was not the issue last night & I made my way to Fridley. For the Bulldogs however, the result was another loss to a Northwest Suburban Conference team, this time to Totino-Grace, which also happens to be a 5AAA section rival.

A hot 10-0 start after seven possessions helped propel the Eagles to victory. The string theory I observe (scores—or stops—of three straight possessions helped the Eagles to soar in the beginning. Their first offensive string was three consecutive 3s to push the score to 19-8. Ava Litecky sandwiched one by Amelia Saylor during that stretch. It soon was four straight scores with an offensive rebound basket to make it 21-8. Becker called their first time at 15:10 trying to get the Bulldogs ready to respond. A 34-20 mark would be the deepest hole for Becker during the night with about 3:10 remaining in the first half.

At the half TG had an eleven-point lead 37-26. TG, thanks to seven 3s converted (50% behind the arc) had a 102.8 pp100. Becker pp100 was 72.2.

The second half saw some adversity for TG. Ella Emslander exited the game at the 14:55 mark in the second half with what looked like a finger injury. The second TG starter to exit the contest came at the 5:58 mark when #13 picked up her fifth foul. By then the Bulldogs were making a game of it closing the gap at one point to 49-46. When #11 hit a 3 from up top that put the score at 51-49. Litecky provided a pair of free throws on the next Eagle possession to give a little more cushion. #1 scored on the left side for Becker with Litecky again riding to the rescue with a drive off the right for a 55-51 advantage with 4:10 left. Becker kept hanging around getting their free throw game straightened out to close the gap with a pair by #1 with 1:39 left taking the score to 60-58 TG. Both teams traded empty possessions and #3 hit from the right elbow for another four-point margin at 62-58. TG tacked on four more free throws in the next to possession to preserve a key section win.

The Bulldogs won the second half 35-29. Their pp100 was near the gold standard at 97.2. TG cooled off somewhat to 80.6. The lackluster start torpedoed the #7AAA team’s chances for victory. It is hard to play catch up all night, especially right from the start. So how did Becker bounce back? They had a high 2/3 zone with a quick double on Radabaugh as she crossed the timeline. Radabaugh tended to mega-dribble (10 bounces or more) for most of the night. That indicates an offense not moving and stagnant: Players standing & watching, slow passes. Some Eagle players were advertising they were only thinking about passing when they touched the ball. No one was looking to fill space.

The four factors matrix shows that TG racked up 30 points from behind the arc compared to 9 for their guests. They also cashed in at the free throw line to the tune of 83% compared to a substandard 58% for Becker. If the Bulldogs converted at the same 83% rate they would have won 69-66.

Team

Pt

PP100

OR/DR

FTA/m

2A/M

3A/M

TO/TOTO

Totino-Grace

66

91.7

4/31

10/12

13/25

10/29

15/22.93

Becker

61

84.7

13/27

18/31

17/37

3/19

14/21.36

Ava Litecky for TG not only made the 31 Club, but one level better with the 41 Club. She was smoking from the floor at 7/9 on 2s and 3/5 on 3s. She finished with 27 points and was well above the gold standard of 100 pp100 with a 158.8. Teammate Maria Radabaugh, who was celebrating her 1000-point achievement achieved last Saturday prior to the start of the game, ended up with 14, but her pp100 was well below, barely above 60 pp100.

Andersyn Changamire had 21 points, 17 of which came in the second half. Sister Adele was the second leading scorer for the Bulldogs with 13. Neither were close to the gold standard of 100 pp100. Both were under 70 pp100.

Spoiler alert: TG will replace Becker in seeding the state on Sunday by the way.

This was the second charting (already) for TG this year. Last week they lost to Roseville 67-63 at White Bear Lake. Just like Thursday night the Eagles hit for ten 3s in the loss. Their pp100 was ten lower, more in line with the second half last night at 80.8. Radabaugh had better production then with a 95.8 pp100 and 23 points. Litecky scored 17 with an 85.0 pp100.

DAY AHEAD

AAAA

#1 Hopkins hosts DeLaSalle

#2 Minnetonka hosts Lakeville South

#5 Wayzata at #2AAA Orono

#8 Rochester Mayo hosts Northfield

#9 Waconia at Shakopee

AAA

#3 Marshall at Belle Plaine

#4 Cretin-Derham Hall at Forest Lake

#6 Stewartville at Owatonna

#9 Rock Ridge hosts North Branch

AA

#2 Minnehaha hosts Breckenridge

#3 Crosby-Ironton at Pequot Lakes

#5 Goodhue hosts Red Wing

#7 Minnewaska at Montevideo

#10 Sauk Centre at Legacy

A

#4 Northome-Kelliher hosts Walker-Hackensack-Akeley

#6 EGF Sacred Heart hosts Park Christian

[10,7,16,17,18
D1 HIGH FIVE There were 18 teams in action on Sunday *Nunu Agara, Stanford, Hopkins 24-W *Kierra Wheeler, West Virginia, Cooper 21-W *Sophie Hart, Minnesota, Farmington 17-W *Amaya Battle, Minnesota, Hopkins 16-W *Gianna Kneepkens, UCLA, Duluth Marshall 14-W Totals: 92 points, 5-0 Hart set a new personal best.
