This game was tied for the most points scored overall at 161, but was not as close as the Orono over Wayzata contest at 81-80.

This game came close to running time deep in the second half but never crossed the threshold. This game tied two threads for the week—the Northwest Suburban and the Metro West. Clearly the MW conference has moved up the food chain and is probably the third rated conference behind the Lake (who has come back to earth somewhat) and the South Suburban. Waconia won at Prior Lake (South Suburban) on Wednesday, and the Storm now moves to 4-1 on the year with the only blemish a three point loss at Monticello last Saturday. The MW is 24-8 so far this season. The NWS is 28-22. Blaine stands at 3-1. The NWS will be missing the help of Maple Grove who has now moved over to the Lake. The Suburban East and NWS are fighting for the fourth spot in conference rankings (at least at the big school level).

It was raining 3s for both teams last night with Chan winning that battle 10-9. What really separated the two teams was the Storm zipping down court and converting easy layups at the rate of 9/15 compared to Blaine’s 3/5. Both teams were fairly even in boards in which Blaine prevailed 45-43, and turnovers where Chan won 22-26. Neither team was much to write home about at the free throw line with Chanhassen at 52.94% and Blaine converting 52.38%. To be honest, I have not been overwhelmed by the free throw percentage as a group for the entire chartings this year. Keep in mind that free throw percentage is a universal marker: same spot, no defense, so it is a good marker to measure from other years. It is a clear indication of skill level across class and across time. I will have to examine the past scores to see if there really has been a drop, but it seems like there has been.

Chan doubled up Blaine early 16-8 with about a dozen minutes left as the Bengals tried to find the right combination to tamp down the Storm. Blaine was the first to put together a string of three and that cut the deficit to 18-14. The Storm responded with a string of five and that pushed their lead back out to 28-18. Their favorite spot was found in the left corner with Lyla Hentges notching two of her game high six by this stage. Blaine was forced to call their second time out at the seven-minute mark after this barrage. The visitors tacked on another string of four after a missed possession, and the score was 39-23. Chan closed the half with their longest string yet of seven and visions of a century were percolating in their heads as they headed to the locker room up 52-37. The game did not vary much in the second half. The biggest margin was 31 in the second half with under two minutes left.

In the first half Chanhassen had a sizzling 126.8 thanks to strong shooting. The Storm starters were even hotter at 141.2. There was inevitable cool down in the second half to a team mark of 93.2 with the starters still golden at 103.2.

Blaine came in with a 90.7 in the first half, but their starters were only 75. In the second half the Bengals dropped to a 70.5 pp100 with the starters dropping to 65.4.

Four factors

Team

Pt

PP100

OR/DR

FTA/m

2A/M

3A/M

TO/TOTO

Chanhassen

93

109.4

16/27

9/17

27/44

10/27

22/17.27

Blaine

68

80.0

23/22

11/21

15/40

9/30

26/12.96

The Storm provided a rare quadruple 31 Club membership with Lyla Hentges (36); Kate Arnold (35); Lucy Hilgert (33) and Reese Keating (31) all joining. Not only did Chan get four in, all four were golden with scores north of 100 pp100 led by Hentges with a 160. Going 6/10 on 3s explains that elevated number. Many times this year the 31 Club members have struggled to get to even 80 pp100. Blaine’s best 31 Club mark came in at 19 (twice).

DAY AHEAD

Ranked teams in action

AAAA

#8 Rochester Mayo at Andover

AAA

#8 Byron at Caledonia

#9 Delano hosts Prior Lake

AA

#2 Minnehaha at Proctor

A

#2 Mountain Iron-Buhl at Cass Lake-Bena

[10,7,16,17,18
D1 HIGH FIVE There were 23 teams in action on Wednesday.
