ABOUT LAST NIGHT\u2026..ROCHESTER MAYO V ANDOVER<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

#8AAAA Rochester Mayo traveled to Andover to take on the Huskies in a non-conference battle. This kept the theme of the NW Suburban conference featured during the week (with Totino-Grace, & Blaine). The Spartans, having beat unbeaten Northfield the night before, secured another win to move to 5-1 in the year with a loss to Eastview spoiling their mark.<\/p>\n

This game featured a pair of sophs with both surnames starting with \u201cMill.\u201d There was no \u201cMill\u201ding about in this game. Both players produced with guard Amelia Mills from Mayo ending up one shy of the 51 Club with 33 points and a 157.1 pp100 and 6-4 post Logan Miller of Andover knocking down 25 points with a 156.2 pp100. Miller played most of the game with her back to the basket. Along with 6-2 senior Myla Evers, who mainly patrolled the the 3 point line, helped keep the Huskies involved in the game. Both Miller and Evers were made the 31 Club on the nose. Evers pp100 came in at 133.3.<\/p>\n

This game attracted the attention of Gopher coach Dawn Plitzuweit who had to be \u201cmill\u201ding about future Gopher prospects.<\/p>\n

Right away for Mayo notched the first scoring string starting on their second possession. Andover had their first string starting on possession eleven and that last four possessions and also tied the game at 17. Miller scored six of their last nine points in that stretch. The game remained tied at 23 with 9:42 left in the first half. After that Mayo finished the half with a 24-14 burst. In that stretch the scored 3s on three of four possessions in the space of 1:20. At the break Mayo enjoyed a 47-37 lead.<\/p>\n

Andover started hot in the second half scoring on their first three possession, Miller doing the scoring duties, to take the score to 49-43 Mayo. But a three possession turnover spree shortly thereafter initiated by Mills all three times either with a steal or a forced turnover pushed the margin quickly back up to 55-43. The needle really did not move much after that.<\/p>\n

Miller had seven offensive boards on the day, three more than the Mayo team. That should tell you something of the Mayo shooting. They converted on 2s at a 65.5% rate and s 38.7% rate on 3s leaving few offensive boards to be gathered. Indeed, the Spartans were scorching in the first half behind the arc going 10\/20 on their way to a 47-37 advantage. At that stage Mayo was scoring at a 120.5 pp100 rate with the starters hotter at 142.4. Andover was a solid 94.9 as a team with their starters 114.3. Both teams cooled off in the second half with Mayo was still north of 100 with a 105.9 pp100 but their starters dropped to a still healthy 106.2. The hosts dropped to 82.4 as a team with starters coming in at 84.6 in the second half.<\/p>\n

The issue for Andover got hammered on was turnovers. They won big time the battle of the board 41-21. But Mayo crushed them on the turnover war 27-9. The Huskies were turning it over every 13.07 touches while Mayo tripled that touch total to 39.89. Mills was especially effective at this aspect of the game seven d stops alone in the second half to go along with three distruptions. For the game she had 11 d stops with 5 disruptions. That showcased her game reading skills. On the offensive side her body control and ability to finish put her at 10\/12 on 2s and 3\/7 on 3s were impressive. Tack on one turnover in over 81 touches putting her at an elevated status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

This is the second charting for Mayo this year. Earlier they beat Maple Grove in the Breakdown Tip Off at Southwest Christian in Chaska. So how do they compare then & now? On November 22 the Spartans pp100 was 97.5 with Mills scoring 32 points on the way to 118.5 pp10. Teammate Maggie Dyer did one point better with 33 points and a 143.5 pp100; Mills notched the same 50 for her 31 Club score while Dyer was not far behind at 48. Yesterday Dyer had 17 points and a 121.4 pp100 while her 31 Club score fell to 27. Perhaps the 6-4 interior defensive presence explains some of this. Siri Kirkeby had a much better showing Saturday just missing out on the 31 Club by one. Her pp100 was a solid 120. She delivered 4\/7 behind the arc.<\/p>\n

The number of unbeaten teams are dropping like the temps. Last week there were 110 left. Seven days later there are now 58. Once a class gets to ten teams left I will list them. So far AAAA and AAA qualify.<\/p>\n
