Both these teams made their debut in the polls this week. And RW dropped a class in the latest MSHSL shifting of the classes. These former Missota Conference rivals may not be playing in the future as much as RW is due to exit the Big 9 next year for the Hiawatha Valley League. Before that departure, the Wingers almost pulled off a Maryland v Gopher miracle comeback. RW trailed 42-31 with 3:30 left in the game. Then the Wingers got hot. They strung together five straight scores with three of those possessions coming behind the arc narrowing the margin to 47-44 with 23.9 seconds left. Northfield, with 7.5 seconds left was fouled, missed the front end of a one and one, but grabbed the miss. Senior Grace Mostad preserved the victory by cashing in on both charity stripe shots for the final margin.

RW had their five string very late in the game and the Wingers almost pulled a Lazurus. Northfield got their string early with a five straight scoring possession starting on possession five. In that initial burst the Raiders scored four of their five first half 3s taking them from a 4-0 deficit to a 14-4 lead. The similarity with RW was during their five possession string they knocked down three of their five 3s on the night. Together, both teams shot 6-for-38 (15.79%) for the remainder of the night. On their combined hot streaks they were sensational at 7/7.

So why was the game so low scoring punctuated by two hot strings? Play counts were high with Northfield scoring 9/28 on seven or more touches, RW 7/21. Neither side was strong in quick play touches with RW 4/19. Northfield was 8/24. I only charted three transition attempts all night with the Raiders converting twice, RW came up empty. Paint touches were also hard to achieve with RW topping Northfield 45-42. Just as a rule of thumb, paint touches usually come close to matching the final score.

Both teams were relatively stable between halves with Northfield scoring 96.6 pp100 in the first, before cooling off in the second to 77.8. RW came in with 73.3 in the first half and improved to 81.5 in the second half.

One help for Northfield came from their bench which outscored RW 11-0.

Team

Pt

PP100

OR/DR

FTA/m

2A/M

3A/M

TO/TOTO

Northfield

49

87.50

14/22

9/14

8/23

8/26

15/28.33

Red Wing

44

77.20

13/20

5/10

12/31

5/19

16/23.69

No player made the 31 Club. In fact it was difficult to reach the 21 Club. RW’s best was 23 by Hallie Johnson with a pair close behind at 21. Northfield best was Mostad at 22.

Going forward both teams will be chasing front runner & #8AAAA Rochester Mayo the rest of the way for the Big 9 title. Northfield’s only blemish on the year is a nine point loss to the Spartans in Rochester. This was the Wingers first loss in conference. They face Mayo next Friday.

As for the section races Stewartville and Byron, both HVL teams, are the competition for Northfield. RW drops down to 1AA and already has a solid 68-49 win over Goodhue, who moved up from 1A. It should help RW playing a hybrid AAAA/AAA schedule and then dropping down to AA. Caledonia and Lourdes also await in March ready to clip some Wingers. Both teams will take on RW later in the season along with #1AAA Benilde-St. Margaret’s.

DAY AHEAD

AAAA

#1 Hopkins hosts St. Paul Como Park

#2 Minnetonka travels to Moorhead

#9 Waconia travels to Eagan

AAA

No ranked action

AA

#2 Crosby-Ironton hosts Anoka

#6 Caledonia hosts LaCrescent-Hokah

#6 Red Wing travels to Mankato East

A

#8 Mayer Lutheran hosts #10 Hayfield/Schaeffer Academy

#6 Central MN Christian travels to Hull Western Christian, IA

[10,7,16,17,18
D1 HIGH FIVE There were 28 teams playing on Sunday. *Olivia Olson, Michigan, Benilde-St. Margaret’s 23-W *Liv McGill, Florida, Hopkins 18-L *Mara Braun, Minnesota, Wayzata 16-W *Tiny Lewis, Eastern Illinois, Minnehaha 14-L *Kierra Wheeler, West Virginia, Cooper 12-W Totals: 83 points, 3-2 Two AAAA; two AAA; one AA player.
