ABOUT LAST NIGHT\u2026.FOLEY V MILACA<\/strong><\/p>\n

Foley overcame a slow start to stop the Wolves in Milaca 63-57 in the second game of a boy\/girl doubleheader in a key Granite Ridge match up. This contest also has 6AA seeding implications. The GRC has had several teams either receiving votes or in the rankings this season. Quietly it is one of the better AA conferences out there. So far this year I have now charted four of the seven teams. Albany was the power in this conference. But now Little Falls and Foley are sitting on top of the standings. This was Foley\u2019s ninth straight win. Their only loss was the season opener to Mayer Lutheran. Milaca was tagged with their first conference loss last night. According to the QRF Foley should be the #1 seed with Milaca #2.<\/p>\n

The Falcons trailed 14-4 after the first 5:15 of the game and that forced a time out. I was questioning my judgment in attending this game as it looked like a romp. Milaca was scorching the nets to the tune of 127.3 pp100 to only 40.0 for the visitors. After that Foley\u2019s defense firmed up preventing unopposed drives to the rim. The Falcons offense also got on track. The rest of the way (the last 31 minutes of the game) they prevailed 109.3 pp100 to 78.2. Part of that shift was due to foul situations. Milaca did not lack fouls. The Wolves ended up winning that category 19-12. No one fouled out for Milaca, but two starters were saddled with four and that altered the complexion of the game. Foley went on a 14-4 run of their own putting the game in the one possession category. Milaca stretched the lead out again to six (24-18) but the long ball helped cut that deficit for Foley On their last possession of the half they had their first lead of the game at 27-26 on a drive by Katie Mazacek who had 14 points for the night. Milaca scored at the buzzer on an elbow shot by Azalea Tesch to go into break up 28-27.<\/p>\n

Milaca got out of the gate in the second half ahead of Foley after a three-possession scoring string 35-29 capped by an &1 by Madison Gothmann. But Foley strung together four possessions of their own and pulled in front 41-39. Soon the Falcons led by six after a triple by Lydia Anderson who ended up with 14 points on the night. There were eight minutes left in the contest. At the four-minute mark the hosts tied the game at 53 on a shot from the elbow by Madison Gothmann. She wanted to go to the rim but had to be content with a pull up due to the swarm of defenders descending on her. The last four minutes belonged to Foley 10-4. First 6-1 post Alexis Swanson scored from the blocks either because the Wolves had a smaller defender on her or Tesch was unable to physically get after her due to foul situations. Foley scored their final six points by making six free throws.<\/p>\n

Clearly Foley had advantages on the boards, at the line and from behind the line. The only clear domination for Milaca came on 2 FG %. The Falcons had an offensive rebound rate of 51.6% (16\/31) to only 27.3% (9\/33) for the Wolves. Foley MADE 13 free throws while Milaca ATTEMPTED only seven. Also, the Falcons delivered 42.8% from behind the arc good for 18 points, while the hosts were only 15%, good for 9 points. Milaca shot an impressive 59.5% from 2s to only Foley\u2019s 43.2%.<\/p>\n

One other factor tipping the scales to the Falcons was their bench production 15-0. All 15 of those points came from Addison Beier who led a balanced Falcon attack. Four starters were between 14 and eight points. The Wolves Gothmann sisters provided 41 of their 57 points (71.9%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

The only 31 Clubbers on the day were from Milaca and both shared the same last name. The Gothmann sisters had different production values in the mix. Annabelle had the best 31 Club score (34-32) but it was Madison that was more efficient (141.2 pp100 to 81.0). Madison was 10\/13 from the floor mainly on drives to the rim. Annabelle was 7\/14. Neither found the range from deep going a combined 1\/11. Madison was better with the ball with one turnover per 74 touches. Annabelle was much better than average at 30.33, but that and the missed shots affected the pp100 score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
