Thanks to Coach Teas I was able to get to the afternoon matinee (thanks to the caucus) in Morgan. I would have remained at home as my vehicle needed surgery on Wednesday (partial success). It was also a chance to travel with someone expanding my traveling radius. The game turned out to be worthwhile.

This was my first time visiting Cedar Mountain as the Cougars hosted Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in a Tomahawk Conference tilt and 2A section match up (the only Tomahawk gym missing on my list is New Ulm Cathedral). The current #4 SESM Knights showed why they have been rated highly by scoring on their first three possessions led by all state guard Morgan Mathiowetz with a triple on the opening possession. CM scored on their first two chances, but a trend that would haunt the Cougars the rest of the night appeared….They only converted one of two free throws. For the game CM attempted 28 free throws but only converted 17 good for 60.7%. SESM had a better percentage at 66.7, but they only had 18 attempts for the game. In a sense this game came down to the CM balance vs. the star power of SESM. Besides Mathiowetz the Knights have sophomore Olivia Schieffert, a recent addition to the 1000 point club. Schieffert had foul issues most of the time and spent time on the bench limiting her point totals to 14. The five CM starters ranged in points from 18 to nine. In fact just starters CM “won” 65-64. The Knights bench won that battle 9-5 and hence the game. SESM led throughout the first half and enjoyed a 40-32 lead at the break. Scoring cooled down in the second half. With six minutes left the Knights maintained a ten point bump (61-51). But CM stormed back scoring 15 straight points on seven possessions to tie it at 65 with 2:11 left. In fact CM had a crack at taking the lead, but the missed free throw on the front end of that foul chance limited it to a tie. Mathiowetz was going to take the next opportunity and nailed a three to put SESM back in front. They had weathered the storm. The Knights scored their last four possessions and stretched their advantage to 74-67. At the final horn Aubrey Steffl, CM’s leading scorer for the day, hit a three to cut the margin to four.

Team

Pt

PP100

OR/DR

FTM/a

2M/A

3M/A

TO/TOTO

Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s

74

97.4

18/26

12/18

25/48

4/21

18/19.89

Cedar Mountain

70

90.9

7/27

17/28

13/28

9/21

19/17.11

A trio of players made the 31 Club.
