ABOUT LAST NIGHT\u2026.SHAKOPEE V HOLY ANGELS<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

It was raining 3s for Shakopee Saturday afternoon at Holy Angels as the Sabers rattled in 14 3s in a 80-52 victory over the Stars. It did not start out that way for the visitors. The host Stars had a 10-3 lead after five possessions scoring on four of their first five chances including, ironically as it turned out, two 3s. They connected four times behind the arc. Shakopee called time after those first 3 minutes and they must have been reminded that they were the 3 point team. Directly after that time out senior Isabel Runk hit her second 3 of the game. Still HA remained hot and stretched their lead out to 15-6 with their third 3. That was the end of that string. Shakopee hit two more to close the gap to 18-12. A few minutes later they hit three straight 3s and narrowed the gap to 26-24. They grabbed their first lead at 27-26 on another 3, this time by junior Peyton Lindahl. By the break Shakopee nailed nine total for a 35-30 lead. They would tack on five more in the second half for a grand total of 14 and won going away 80-52. Two straight 3s in the second half pushed their lead to 45-32—a 10-2 start to the half. HA tried to stem the tide with a time out after the first three and a half minutes but it was 48-34 at that point. With nine minutes left it was 65-45.<\/p>\n

Besides hitting ten more 3s than the Stars the Sabers ruled the boards grabbing an impressive 47.5% of their own misses. HA was held to only an 18.4% offensive rebound rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Sabers leader was Sadie Hall who made the 31 Club with two to spare. She ended up with 22 points with four made 3s (same as Runk). Not only did she score frequently, but made only one turnover in 75 touches.<\/p>\n

Matching her for the 31 Club for HA was Vivian Carter who had 13 points and led both teams with 11 d stops. She also led HA with seven distributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

This completes my chartings for section 2AAAA, traditionally one of the strongest sections in AAAA. Recently top seeds have faltered when heading to Williams Arena. Right now Minnetonka looks to be the #1 seed.<\/p>\n

What do these two teams have in common? They were both coached by Jim McCormack. Both teams made the state with McCormack: Shakopee in 1979 and 1981; HA in 1986<\/p>\n

WEEK THAT WAS<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

UNBEATEN<\/strong><\/p>\n

That sound you heard on Saturday morning was New London-Spicer falling to Sauk Centre at Alexandria. That means we are down to two standing undefeated teams. Both start with Ms. But my guess is that only Mountain Iron-Buhl has a possibility to finish the 2026 campaign unblemished. My guess is that Menahga will have a hard time extricating themselves out of 8AA. The Braves have the problem of playing a single A schedule and forced to play AA teams to get to state.<\/p>\n

Two teams left the lists below this week:<\/p>\n

Parnassus Prep in 5AA won twice the past week. They broke their winless streak with a victory over MN Deaf Monday 55-36 and continued on with a 53-21 win over Hmong Academy on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

In 5A Verndale snapped their streak with a 43-34 win over Browerville-Eagle Valley on Monday. To be fair someone was going to win that battle of winless teams.<\/p>\n

Notice Mayo & Northfield are both Big 9 teams (or is it Big 12?). They get enhanced defense against 0-22 Albert Lea, 3-18 Mankato East. Neither of those teams averaged more than 40 ppg. Throw in three more sub 45 offensive teams and the numbers are less impressive.<\/p>\n

Obviously better than last week with three games, with all six new to the charts. Still my car needs diagnostics now as the repairs have not cured the ailment. Translation $$$$ to be spent. Crossed off this week include #51 Holy Angels; #77 Edina; #83 Shakopee; #94 Buffalo; #106 Sleepy Eye St. Mary\u2019s; #151 Cedar Mountain. The odd thing was two lower teams topped higher teams when I charted. I was also able to complete my Lake Conference set (eight teams) and 2AAAA (seven teams). I will be hard pressed to complete more conferences\/sections.<\/p>\n
