STMA is now #46 and 10-16. Why was STMA the higher seed? 14 of those losses came to teams that are or have been in the top 10. They also ripped Alex 64-36 a month ago.

This was a low scoring affair all night. For the first half the Knights had a slight advantage in a game marred by missed opportunities. To use the Olympic hockey metaphor there were several wide open empty netters that missed the mark (Alex was 2/7 on transition, STMA never had a chance). Neither squad shined offensively in this game with the first half pp100s for both teams sub 70. It was fairly tight, even if the scoring was light with STMA holding a five point advantage at the widest in the first half. At the break it was 24-20. Alexandria grabbed the lead at 34-30 when Riley Beyer made the first free throw and then the Cards got the missed rebound off the STMA hands. Lauren Beyer cashed in with a 3 from the left corner on the inbounds. That started an 11-3 run to put them, what looked like the driver’s seat, at 41-33. The next eight possessions over the course of the next 4:30 minutes delivered nothing. The Knights scored 11 unanswered points. A key contributor in that surge was Caelyn Foster who had three points, and 3 d stops. McKinley Hoelscher broke the drought for Alex with a driving left hand lay up to make it 44-43 STMA with under 1:10 to go. The Knights scored on a nine touch possession with Tenlee Egan on the right block. The drought returned for Alex on their next three chances and they were forced to foul. STMA was ¾ at the line down the stretch.

Both teams had important pieces of puzzle spending more time on the bench than on the floor. For Alex it was Kate Hennessy who had two fouls in the 2:15, gained her third shortly after returning after the nine minute mark, number four was less than a minute into the second half. As a result, Hennessy did not get into an offensive flow. Cail Jahnke exited the game with 8:13 left in the first half with an injury after driving the baseline and attempting a reverse lay up on the left side. She did not return. She too did not have a point. With both players out the depth of the bench was tested. STMA won that battle 17-5 and 81.0 pp100 to 35.7.

STMA won the offensive board battle 25.58% to only 12.5%. Maybe it would be better to state the Knights dominated the defensive boards. Because they really clamped down on second chancers for Alex. Free throws were a huge advantage for STMA with eight more made, and 13 more attempted. It did not help that Alex had chances in the drought to score at the line but were 0/4 in one stretch.

Team

Pt

PP100

OR/DR

FTM/a

2M/A

3M/A

TO/TpTO

LEAD

STMA

49

74.2

11/35

17/29

7/28

6/23

11/33.64

6

Alexandria

43

64.2

5/32

9/16

8/26

6/25

14/24.79

8

With such a low scoring game it should come to no surprise that no one made the 31 Club.
