The Hawks swept the singles and added first doubles to their victory column. The Hawks overwhelmed Tartan in the singles holding the hosts to single digits in five of the eight sets. Fourth singles proved to be the tightest contest in the singles department with Humboldt’s Shae Paw Wah scoring exact 21-17 scores. Tartan had the advantages in doubles but the margins were much tighter. Humboldt’s first doubles pair of Lwe Paw and Way Ber Paw had the only set win that went to extra points. They won the first set of their match with Pearl and Evylynn 22-20.

Humboldt evens their mark at 3-3 on the young season. Tartan is now 1-1 on the year. They beat Kennedy on Wednesday 4-3. They stopped a two game losing streak this week where they fell by identical 4-3 marks to Johnson and Highland Park.

Both squads have new coaches. Jesse Day has replaced long time coach Bill Norberg at Humboldt and Kelly Vang replaces David Lu who has moved to Wayzata. This week I charted new coaches at Como Park, Edina, Community School of Excellence and these two. That makes seven of the 13 new coaches.

If you have been to Tartan for matches they are now in their third court system. The first year they were in the old main gym. Then there was an addition with the new main competition court the site of badminton with six courts. The construction is finally over and they are in an additional space with room for eight courts.

SINGLES

1 Kpru Paw, H def Arissa 21-6, 21-12

2 Say Paw Htoo, H def Althea 21-9, 21-8

3 Lah Sher Poe, H def Yer 21-4, 21-3

4 Shae Paw Wah, H def Ya-Yua 21-17, 21-17

DOUBLES

1 Lwe Paw / Way Ber Paw, H def Pearl / Evylynn 22-20, 21-15

2 Madi / Vivian, T def Saw Saw / Vitoria Teliz Torres 21-12, 21-10

3 Angel / Ashley, T def Yeabsira Bogale / Betelihem Mengestab 21-14, 21-13

BY THE NUMBERS
SINGLES
Matches: Humboldt 4-0 1.000
Games: Humboldt 8-0 1.000
points: Humboldt 168-76 .689
Set 1 points: Humboldt 84-36 .700
Set 2 points: Humboldt 84-40 .677
decided by 10+: Humboldt 5-0 1.000
decided by 3-: none
margin: Humboldt 11.50
DOUBLES
Matches: Tartan 2-1 .667
Games: Tartan 4-2 .667
points: Tartan 119-92 .564
Set 1 points: Tartan 62-48 .564
Set 2 points: Tartan 57-44 .564
decided by 10+: Tartan 1-0 1.000
decided by 3-: Tartan 1-0 1.000
margin: Tartan 4.500

FIRST SINGLES

Kpru PAW 2, ARISSA 0
(reported & charted 21-6, 21-12)

Kpru Paw of Humboldt dominated action with aggressive play and the net and pouncing on birds Arissa let hang too long in the air. For the match Paw sided out at a .714 clip with all six Arissa services shut down in the first set. Paw also prevented any run of three or more points the entire match. At no point in the match did Arissa lead. At best there was ties in the second set at one and two. Paw controlled winners 32-8 with 15 going for smashes. On top of that she did not permit Arissa any smash points. Just on odd stroke counts the winners totaled 22-3.

Paw gained her first run on her second service in the first set building a 5-1 lead. Her longest string came on her fourth service in that set where she added eight to make it 14-3. By that point Paw put down five smashes. In set two on her third service Paw gained her first run of that set going out to a 7-2 lead. Of her five winners at that stage, three were via smashes, two on the three count. The match ended with Paw scoring the last six points. On feature of the second set was the increase in Paw’s winners off the soft drive with five total in that set.

Kpru Paw moves to 2-3 on the year.
