The Polars pieced together their win with a sweep at doubles plus fourth singles. And fourth singles was the final match to be decided. Darla Fernandez-Moncayo squeeked by Greta in three with the last set going 21-19. Prior to this match North’s doubles had two wins on the year.

The margins favored the Lakers but only by 2.9 points in singles. Two matches there went to three sets with each team getting a victory. And in both cases the third set was decided by two. Doubles was a more comfortable margin of 7.17 for the Polars. Overall there were five sets decided by two points in the match, North had three. There were also two extra point sets with each team getting one of those sets. The longest set came in the second set at third doubles with Niomi Reyes and Cassandra Carroll getting 24.

With North’s win today that leaves three teams searching for their first victory: Fridley; Hiawatha; and Community School of Excellence.

SINGLES

1 Maya, Shramm, SW def Kymani McLane-Taylor 21-13, 21-12

2 Olive C, SW def Na Lee 21-19, 16-21, 22-20

3 Kaysa W, SW def Miyu Bolding 21-11, 21-14

4 Darla Fernandez-Moncayo, N def Greta T 21-14, 16-21, 21-19

DOUBLES

1 Doretha Landers / Azziah Foots, N def Maya Staab / Ophelia Heer 21-12, 21-18

2 Ja’Niyah Miller / Tiffany Gaspar Sanchez, N def Anna Eaves / Sadie Mulholland 21-8, 21-7

3 Niomi Reyes /Cassandra Carroll, N def Olive / Lucy 21-19, 24-22

BY THE NUMBERS
SINGLES
Matches: Southwest 3-1 .750
Games: Southwest 7-3 .700
points: Southwest 197-168 .540
Set 1 points: Southwest 77-64 .546
Set 2 points: Southwest 79-63 .556
Set 3 points: Southwest 41-41 .500
decided by 10+: Southwest 1-0 1.000
decided by 3-: Southwest 2-1 .667
margin: Southwest 2.900
DOUBLES
Matches: North 3-0 1.000
Games: North 6-0 1.000
points: North 129-86 .600
Set 1 points: North 66-50 .569
Set 2 points: North 66-47 .584
decided by 10+: North 2-0 1.000
decided by 3-: North 3-0 1.000
margin: North 7.167

FIRST SINGLES

Maya SHRAMM 2, Kymani MC LANE-TAYLOR 0
(reported 21-13, 21-12; recorded 21-13, 21-11)

It was all about the start in this match. Maya Shramm of the Lakers established who was in charge early in both sets racing out to a 11-2 lead after her first two services in set one and sprinting to the first ten points in the second set. After that Kymani McLane-Taylor played Shramm even with both scoring 20 points after the first player (Shramm) reached 11. But by then it was too high a high to climb for KMLT.

Shramm’s first point in the first set lasted 16 strokes. But that was not the trend the rest of the match. The next ten points for Shramm had five coming on one stroke including four aces along with two points on the second stroke. KMLT did show life late with a run of four on her eighth service to narrow the gap to 18-12.

In the second set Shramm shot up like a rocket with the first ten points. The winners also increased from twelve to sixteen. The biggest change came on smashes with eight with only one in the first. Despite that early launch, KMLT again fought back. On her fourth service she notched her only run of the second set to narrow the margin to 14-8. But KMLT was not able to generate much in the winner category all match—only six total. That inability to score hampered comeback efforts.

Shramm is now 2-4 with three losses coming at first singles, one at second singles. McLane-Taylor is now 1-4 for the year.

Category

SHRAMM

MC
