But it was the same Eagle as yesterday. And the results were almost the same. Eden Prairie again went on the road and today it was #1 Edina the destination. The Hornets buzzed the Eagles not allowing a set win as the hosts swept all 14 on their way to another 7-0 shutout. This was the same result as in the first meeting on April 8.

Edina’s margins in singles were almost 10 points per set at 9.875 and that is counting the tight contest at first singles, the closest of the day, with a differential of six total points. Doubles were slightly closer, but Edina still had a healthy 8.667 gap with their neighbors from the west. The only extra point set came at first singles in the second set (more on that below). Only one other set was decided by two points and that came at third doubles with the standard 21 the finishing mark.

The Hornets are 7-0 in Suburban action, 10-0 overall. The Eagles fall to 5-2 in the Suburbs, 7-3 overall.

This also concludes Eagle week for my charts. Ge needed extra points in the second set to secure the win as she held off Nguyen three set points. Ge’s side out game was a strong .731 to .481, and that translates to scoring on serve. Neither player had robust service points, but Ge led in that category slightly at 19-13. Nguyen tallied more winners on the night at 26-21, but that didn’t factor in getting a win. That is because Nguyen also led in errors 24-13. Neither player was clean in the first set. Nguyen had a 10-5 winner mark in that set. But her errors torpedoed any hopes in that frame with 16 to only 7 for Ge. Getting back to the winners for a moment….Nguyen did win that category by five, but it was Ge taking the smash category 12-8, a four-plus differential. Nguyen’s top winner was the drive, which is low, flat and tends to go deeper.

Another interesting point in this match was that Nguyen led at the 11 point mark in both sets by the same exact score 11-10. Ge had more in the tank at that point outscoring her opponent 25-17. Runs were hard to come by in this match. Ge had two in each set, Nguyen had three total. Ironically it was Nguyen the first to notch a run. On her sixth service in the first set she had a run of four after a two stroke smash to give her that 11-10 advantage. But the last three were all via Ge hitting errors. Ge responded with her first run, but again all were by errors by her opponent. The back breaker in the first set came on Ge’s tenth service when she broke free from a 15 all tie. She got the bird back on a clear that sailed too deep. Ge added three more points that left her two points shy from a win. Two side outs later the first set was completed.

Ge had the first run in the second set on her second service. Nguyen responded on her second service with a run of four. That made the score 5-3. The difference in the second set was both players scored more winners and cut back on errors. Ge went from five winners to 16. Nguyen also delivered 16. Ge inched forward at 15-13 after a seven stroke clear. Nguyen had a two stroke smash to get control of the bird again and then had three straight winners including a seven stroke block. That was part of a 15 straight winner sequence combining both players. Nguyen led 19-17 when Ge found new life with a two stroke smash followed by a seven stroke smash. A two stroke drive gave Nguyen her first set point opportunity. Ge was aggressive toward the net on a four stroke smash to tie it back at 20. Another Nguyen set point opportunity presented itself after a four stroke drive. Ge held off that chance with a four stroke drop. Nguyen had a final chance after a three stroke hitting error that went wide. A four stroke drive evened it up at 22. A three stroke clear to the left gave Ge her first match point. She took advantage of that with a four stroke hitting error that just fell wide.

In another oddity…the margins today between these two were the same as the first meeting. But then Ge won the first set in extra points 22-20 before finishing with a 21-17 second set.

Ge is now 5-1 for the year. Nguyen is now 6-4.

Category

GE

<td
