Her also fell during the week to Highland Park’s Nica Johnson.

Edina continued to add to their winning streak with two sweeps over Kennedy on Tuesday and Washington on Wednesday followed by a 6-1 victory at Minnetonka on Thursday. The Hornets now have 59 wins stretching back over three plus years. If the Hornets would win the rest of their matches this year it would yield 64 wins leaving them nine away from the all-time record. Johnson holds the record at 75 wins.

FIRSTS

This week saw a couple of firsts: Fridley won their first match in program history with a 5-2 victory at Hiawatha Collegiate on Wednesday. Fridley started their program in 2023 and was a collective 0-15 prior to their win. The unique feature, so far on the Tigers, is they are Road Warriors (or Tigers). They have never hosted a home match.

This was the first time this year Community of Peace number one singles Jenny Lee (also Tigers) tasted defeat. It was a three-set loss at home to Humboldt’s Kpru Paw. Lee put up a fight with the third set going to extra points for Paw 23-21. Paw had a busy week starting with a win over Vivian Nguyen of Eden Prairie on Monday. She fell to Gao Zhia Vue of Harding on Thursday but narrowed the gap to -4.00 in the loss. In the first battle the gap was -9.00. Vue won Thursday’s second set 21-19. With that loss by Lee there will be no undefeated state champions this year….at the first singles position. Tsuki Solheid of Como Park and Sophia Mitchell of Roosevelt have not lost a scheduled match (not scrimmage) at second singles. Solheid will be thrown in with the number one singles in the St. Paul City Tournament to be held Wednesday and Thursday at Washington. Mitchell will need to upend Roosevelt’s number one singles Mollie Anderson in the Minneapolis tournament on Tuesday at Edison. We are still waiting for one school’s decision. That means that there will be a change in the Monday format. We will continue to use what we have used in the past. In other words, one school will face one school. There will be no preliminary game. That means the top five seeds will have a bye that Monday. Seeds 6–16 will host one team to advance to Tuesday. It also means the top eight teams will send their third singles and doubles.

TIMING INDIVIDUAL TOURNAMENT

Here is a heads up on how the state tournament will probably work out. Last year action in the 96 match singles/doubles tournament started at 4:39 p.m.. There will be two matches for players (probably) from 4:30 to 6:15. Four matches from 6:15 to 9 p.m. What does that mean? The early two rounds will have substantial breaks. The 6:15 to 9 p.m. window will have intense action, and the rest/recovery periods will be diminished. Players should prepare by managing sleep, diet, and wellbeing for the challenges ahead.

THE ROAD AHEAD: THE WEEK

There are critical meetings taking place in this last week of the regular season. The City Conference tournaments are center stage in the center of the week. Minneapolis showcases their singles on Tuesday and doubles on Wednesday at Edison. The top two slots from each school are entered with the top two teams (Roosevelt and Camden) sending three entries. Washington will host the St. Paul conference tournament on Wednesday and Thursday. There all teams send their four singles and three doubles to whittle down to the crown. Will there be a foreshadowing of things to come next week at the state championship? Here is the frequency of the double crown:

The singles champion in the St. Paul City tournament went on to win the overall state singles title 14 times including the last three. In 2022 Cinderella Nwe of Washington upended eventual state champ HaNeul Jeong-McDonell for the conference crown.

The doubles winner of the St. Paul tournament has won state 13 times. The previous occurrence was in 2023, when Johnson’s Alexis Xiong and Birdy Xiong both achieved double victories. In the last ten years the doubles double has happened four times with Johnson getting three, and Washington one. But in the last five years the double has occurred twice: 2021 and 2023.

How many times have the same school featured the final two players? Five times for singles since 2001 with Su Meh and Gaonou Vang last year the latest. As for doubles, the dual meetings have happened seven times with the last occurrence again featuring Governors from 2023 Alexis Xiong and Birdy Xiong over Faith Moua and Lena Nguyen.

What about Minneapolis and their champions? The last time a Minneapolis player won the singles title was in 2005 with Edison’s Bao Xiong. The last time there was an all-Minneapolis city final was in 2004 Edison’s Kia Xiong stopped South’s Rachel Engh. Contests from the Mill City have been absent for the last 20 years.

It has even been longer for a Minneapolis doubles team to win the state title. The last was Souki Sylaphet and Keo Kong Thornsauahn of Edison in 1999. The last to make the finals was Mai Lor Xiong and Mai Nhia Yang of Edison in 2002.

In addition to the individual tournament activities within the city conferences, several significant competitions are scheduled to take place. Foremost among them are conference leaders tangling. The Twin City Championship will be held at Roosevelt where the Teddies will host the St. Paul co-champs Harding. The Teds also face the top Suburban squad on Friday when they travel to Edina. After Tuesday’s action the final team rankings and state schedule will be released on Wednesday morning.

UNDEFEATED

As mentioned earlier there are no more remaining first singles that are undefeated. Jenny Lee of Community of Peace Academy lost at home to Humboldt’s Kpru Paw in three sets, the last being 23-21. By this time next week there may be zero left standing. Como Park’s second singles Tsuki Solheid will have to survive three players that have been ranked #1 at one point during the season—one of which is her sister Niko.

The Edina pair of Daisy Hennington-Hoff and Ella Burke remain unbeaten at first doubles. At second doubles there are new creations that have yet to taste defeat. Krystal Moua and Shalisha Vang of Johnson are 8-0; while Caitlin and Reese are 7-0 at Edina. Both are in the second doubles slot.

TEAMS: 1 Edina

1st SINGLES: none

2nd SINGLES: 2: Tsuki
