The number one seed won four matches today and faced a former city champion to claim the crown—teammate Sophia Mitchell. Mitchell claimed the title two years ago but missed last year’s city tournament due to injury. Oddly enough, Mitchell and Anderson were city doubles champions in 2023, so this is Anderson’s second title to match her doubles title.

Anderson opened the day with a quick two set win over Washburn number two Sam 2 & 7. In the quarterfinals she beat Southwest’s number one Maya in two 17 & 10. Then came a three-set win over Edison’s Lisa. The Tommy got a 22-20 win in the first set, before Anderson came back to take the next two sets 15 & 14. The championship was not as close as those matches. Anderson won 13 & 6. Perhaps it is because both players were quite familiar with each other’s work. In the first set Anderson broke it open with an eight-point run greased with three straight drops. She also closed with a run of three.

The second set saw Anderson rack up two runs, including a deluge on her third service with nine points. Both runs started on missed Mitchell serves. The final run also started on a Mitchell missed serve and lasted six points.

The serve-receive game belonged to Anderson. She had a side out score of .750; she outscored Mitchell 30-7 on serve generating 71% of her points and she had 11 more winners over Mitchell. The drop was most effective with eight gaining points.

Anderson, who was ranked #10 in the latest poll, is now 20-2 on the season. Mitchell was one behind Anderson in the last poll at #11 has now lost twice in the past two days. Her record is 19-2.

Category

ANDERSON

<td
