Monday they lost at home to the St. Paul champion Harding 6-1. Today they got one more victory on the road with a 5-2 loss to the Hornets. Edina took the middle of the singles and swept the doubles to put together their win. Two sets went to three sets and both went into the Teddies column at first and fourth singles. And both players lost the first set before making their comeback.

Oddly enough the two could face each other again on Tuesday in a quarterfinal battle. Roosevelt would need two victories before the meeting, Edina needs one.

SINGLES
1. Mollie Anderson, R def Evelyn Ge 16-21, 21-18, 21-16
2. She lost to top-ranked Gao Zhia Vue of Harding in two sets on Monday. On Tuesday she won the Minneapolis city singles title, beating teammate Sophia Mitchell for the crown. She wrapped up the week with a three-set away victory over Edina’s #3-ranked Evelyn Ge. Looking at the numbers, it was almost all even. But Anderson delivered as the match wore on. She had the better side-out percentage throughout the match at .725 to .667, both extremely high numbers. Both players had sixteen and fifteen services in the second set as the match evolved into a side out fest. But in the third set Anderson stepped up her game to 11/13 side out or .846. Neither player could squeeze much out for service points all night. Both finished with 17 service points over three sets. Anderson had a hard time generating any runs. She had zero for the first two sets. That is what makes the win in the second set interesting. She survived without any offensive mojo. Her first run of the entire match came on her ninth service in the third set (or 35th for the match). That run put her on top to stay. She initiated it with a two-stroke smash and then had three winners on a three stroke to pull out in front 13-10. She added a second run four services later to stand on the verge at 20-14. All four of the points in that run were errors. Ge held off match point twice before succumbing to Anderson.

What is interesting in the two-stroke battle is both tied for the game with 26 wins each. But when did those wins happen? For Anderson 11 came in the final set to eight for Ge. But an even closer examination shows Anderson winning two strokes exclusively in the third 9-4. Just two stroke winners and the contrast is even more severe 9-2.

Looking at winners Anderson had two more than Ge. Anderson led the power game 13-10 in smashes, but it was the third set that truly marked the turning point. Anderson led 7-2, scoring five of those points with two strokes. Anderson’s best advantage on winners was on the drives at 7-2. Ge’s best advantage in winners came on clears 8-4.

There was a lot of carnage in the singles in the week. Anderson is sure to improve on the #10 ranking.

Category

ANDERSON

<td
