Earlier in March Central beat EP 4-3. The Eagles were missing their first doubles team and in the previous meeting they picked up a win. The only player to reverse the result from meeting one was EP fourth singles Rachelle Johnson.

The top of the card had the most competitive matches with both teams splitting the results. In both cases the winner fell in the first set. May Garvey of Central and Tracey Yang of EP both rallied for their wins.

EP coach Becker was unavailable today. Serving was an issue for both players in this game with a combined 17 errors. Line hugging led to more errors with clears or smashes just missing and this was on both ends. Neither player scored over .500 on percent of points on winners. I have included the winners and errors points per set to indicate how the match was evolving. Nelson’s error totals mushroomed to 17 in the last set—-81% of Garvey’s totals. Garvey cleaned up her errors in the final frame, almost cutting the second set total in half.

Nelson rallied from a five point deficit in the first set (9-4) to pick up the win. Garvey’s last lead came at 17-15 when she missed a serve deep. Nelson closed with a flourish and never gave the bird back. Five of those six points came on Garvey hitting errors, three of those on serve receive. Nelson made effective use of the right sideline in that set with six of her 11 winners coming close to that line. Garvey got out of the gate fast in the second set with the first four points. The Central senior added another run of four to stretch the margin to six (12-6). Nelson surged back with two runs of three sandwiched around one Garvey point to close the gap to 14-13. Garvey responded right back with the next run of three started with an eight stroke smash and capped by a nine stroke cross court drop (17-13). Garvey shut the door on Nelson’s serve in the third set (with Nelson’s help). Nelson only scored on two of her nine services. Four times she missed her first attempt, leaving her at 64% serving in the third set.

Category

GARVEY

NELSON

Side out

19/32-.594

17/30-.567

3+ Runs

8

4

Longest point string

5

6

Service points

29

19

Serving %

51/58-.879

41/51-.804

Point generated off serve

.500

.373

Overall points

59

50

Points after 11

25

29

Points after own errors

12

18

Strokes

219

170

Strokes per point

3.712

3.400

5+ rallies

14(.237)

13(.260)

2- rallies

22(.373)

24(.480)

WINNERS

28(.475)

23(.460)

Aces

0

3(.130)

Blocks

0

0

Clears

6(.214)

3(.130)

Drives

4(.143)

6(.261)

Drops

4(.143)

2(.087)

Soft drives

5(.179)

4(.174)

Smashes

9(.321)

5(.217)

ERRORS

27(.540)

31(.525)

Deep

3(.111)

8(.258)

Net

6(.222)

6(.194)

Wide

11(.407)

7(.226)

Serve

7(.259)

10(.323)

WINNER LOCATION

Back line

6(.214)

6(.261)

Middle

11(.393)

9(.391)

Front line

11(.393)

8(.348)

Left

14(.500)

11(.478)

Right

14(.500)

12(.522)

Winner count per set

8-16-4

11-7-5

Error count per set

10-11-6

9-5-17

W:E Ratio

1.037

0.742

Margin

3.000

Set Point %

2/5-.400

1/1-1.000

Time

21:26.28

ST.
