There was only one match that went the distance and that came at third doubles where CP’s Chi Bonafacio and Eh Plot Soe bounced back after falling in the second set. The match did feature three sets that went to extra points. They all came on the second set and all three won.

A change of 11 points (eight at second singles, three at third doubles) would have tipped the scales to the Blaze 4-3.

I forgot to mention on Monday that CP has new uniforms that have set the bar higher for style.

SINGLES
1. What was unique about this match is that the runs were few and far between. If you liked side out games, this was for you. Waterman prevented Paw from squeezing points on 17 services and that led to a .680 side out percentage. Paw’s side out percentage included a couple of self inflicted side outs on Waterman’s missed serves. Another feature of this game was the heavy reliance on the soft drive; Waterman tallied ten for winners, Paw had seven. That category was the highest win total for each.

We should probably be talking about side out strings in these sets. In the first set Waterman started off with four straight side outs and that helped her to an 8-4 lead. Paw would stay close narrowing the gap to two (14-12). In the first run of the day, Waterman scored after a missed serve three more times to increase the margin to 18-12, and then closed the set with three straight.

In set two Paw had the early advantage with the first two points on a missed serve by Waterman followed by a five stroke drop. That lead held to 6-4 when Waterman got her only run of the second set to inch forward 7-6. Paw regained the lead with her only run of the day (three points) at 10-9. Backing up Waterman scored on the longest rally of the day on a 13 stroke drop. Paw got the lead back at ten with a twelve stroke hitting error. The set then reverted to side out and more serve/receive points. There was a string of eight straight side outs which left both players at 18. After a two stroke soft drive to the left front corner, Waterman got another point on serve (on a four stroke hitting error) and had match point available. Paw held it off with a two stroke soft drive of her own to the right front corner. Two hitting errors ended the match, the last on a clear that was too deep.

Category

<td
