Washington had it after their loss to Harding on Wednesday. Central, after taking a pair off #1 Johnson on Wednesday was feeling good about their situation. It was the classic trap game. The host #2 Eagles had the brooms revved up and ready to go in a quick sweep of the #5 Minutemen. Central only was able to win two sets of the 14 played and both of those came in singles. Third doubles went to Washington on a first set injury default.

All this sets up a rollicking finish the next few weeks. Players have risen to the occasion. Sustained performance and focus will be required to be crowned champion. This week has shown some topsy turvey results. On any given day….

SINGLES
1. This was a turnaround for both players from Wednesday. Say fell in the first set and was down 16-13 in the second when she rattled off seven straight points to create a new story line. She then rode that momentum into the final frame to pick up a big win. Say won despite only getting Garvey to side out at a 34.6% clip. Garvey also had more runs. There was a change after the first set on Say’s part. She came out much more aggressive with her contacts. Garvey, know for her power game, was limited to only four smashes in the entire match. This could be because Say didn’t give her juicy opportunities. Also Say outscored her in that category. Say also was aggressive in winners 38-25. Interestingly, Say, despite falling in the first set, out earned Garvey 12-7, a portent of things to come. The soft drive teardrop proved to be the most reliable point scorer for Say at 26% while Garvey’s favorite winner today was the clear at .320. There were a couple of mega strokes in this contest including the final that topped them all—a 16 stroke hitting error that sailed deep.

Garvey rolled at the beginning of the first set with six straight (8-1). Say regained composure and responded right back with five straight all started by a missed serve. Both players then traded runs of three. Side outs were an endangered species in this set. There was a side out at 3-1. The next one came at 17-14, 27 points later. We already mentioned Say’s revival with seven straight late in the second set. Garvey held off set point three times and just missed on a drop attempt that would have tied it up at 20. Contrary to the first set side outs were fruitful in this set with a string of six straight in the middle of the set.

The final frame saw Say jump off with two three point runs on her first two serves. With a 6-1 advantage Garvey had to dig out of a hole. She did manage to rally with three winners (6-4) and got to 7-6 when another mega run by Say put her back in the hole (13-7). Say spread it around on that six point run with five different types of winners. Garvey had one last run of three to close the gap to 17-14. A four stroke punch smash stopped the string and Say took advantage of hitting errors the rest of the way.

Category

<td
