This week I

completed the South Suburban (Farmington was the last piece of the puzzle), the first conference finished. Many of the teams are part of last week’s examination of the section 3AAAA. Here is how the South Suburban stacks up to the recent past.

In the four class era of 22 years, using current conference
configurations, the South Suburban has captured five titles (22.7%) and that
has been split by two teams: Lakeville/Lakeville North and Eastview, last year’s
undefeated champ. It should be pointed out Burnsville won titles in the two
class era. There are 10 teams in this conference. Three have yet to make a
state tournament appearance: Eagan, Farmington, and Lakeville South. Farmington
has a very good chance to snap that drought this year.

So how do these teams stack up compared to the recent past?
Is basketball getting better in South Suburban?

 SOUTH
 SUBURBAN

 PP100

 PP100*

 2019

 88.17

 87.52

 2018

 88.68

 81.36

 2017

 91.01

 91.09

 2016

 90.48

 88.85

 2015

 89.87

 87.32

*not counting Eastview

The peak year came during the 2016-17 season, and in the last five years this current season is the lowest. Not by wide margins, but a drop of 0.51. From the peak the drop is more severe at 2.92. But look at the pp100 without Eastview. Those numbers have bounced up “bigly.” The rest of the conference is getting stronger. Still 2017 is the gold standard for the South Suburban with and without Eastview.

The breakdowns and splits show some interesting trends. The
sweet spot for player age is 2021. The sophomore class is where the strength is
right now. The senior class, in the South Suburban, finishes third behind the
Sophs and Juniors. The Sophs have a cumulative 12-6 record and are the only
class over 100 pp100. But don’t write off the seniors just yet. They have the
better 31 Club marks, and the juniors have more 31 (or 25) Club members. Look
at the pp100s and 31 Club scores for height. There the 5-4 and under grouping
lead the way. You can thank McKenna Hofschild for pulling up those numbers. Hofschild,
charted twice so far, is the only member of the 41 Club in the conference. She
just missed out by one point the other time.

 SOUTH
 SUBURBAN

 W

 L

 PP100

 Cumulative

 67

 40

 .626

 Overall charted

 6

 7

 88.17

 W

 6

 0

 104.63

 L

 0

 7

 72.37

 SECTION

 1AAAA

 1

 3

 81.78

 2AAAA

 2

 1

 96.76

 3AAAA

 3

 3

 87.60

 OPPONENTS

 Opp record +500

 2

 6

 78.37

 Opp record -500

 4

 1

 104.84

 Vs Ranked AAAA

 0

 5

 69.84

 SUPERLATIVES

 Highest

 124.6

 Lowest

 56.9

 Lowest W pp100

 88.6

 Highest L pp100

 83.3

 #over 100 pp100

 5

 0

 5

 #under 70 pp100

 0

 2

 2

 Average
 starter age

 20.09

 98.6

 2019.4-2019.9

 1

 4

 83.54

 2020-2020.4

 4

 3

 89.47

 2020.5-2021.2

 1

 0

 101.54

 2019 starters

 6

 14

 98.4

 2020 starters

 10

 13

 99.1

 2021 starters

 12

 6

 103.1

 2022 starters

 2

 2

 69.2

 W ave age

 20.33

 119.8

 L ave age

 19.89

 80.3

 31Club
 ave

 18.12

 #31/#25

 2019 starters

 20.95

 3/4

 2020 starters

 18.04

 3/7

 2021 starters

 16.94

 0/3

 2022 starters

 9.75

 0/0

 Height
 ave

 PP100

 6-4 to 6-2

 2-1

 96.7

 1/1

 6-1 to 5-11

 9-13

 92.6

 0/1

 5-10 to 5-8

 11-12

 98.0

 2/6

 5-7 to 5-5

 6-3

 92.2

 1/3

 5-4 &
