Seventh grader Angel Liang beat Humboldt’s Lay Lay in two sets but had to get her bearings in the first set before closing with a fury. If we look at the last portion of the first set and the entire second set Liang outscored Lay 33-13. Despite only being a seventh grader Liang packed a powerful punch. She racked up a season high 21 smashes as she aggressively pounced on birds close to the net. Lay was in positive territory when it came to winners over errors, but Liang belying her youth, had focus on winning the longer rallies (19-7). The highlight of the match was a 21 stroke drop by Liang in the first set making the score 6-4 in favor of Lay. Liang didn’t take her first lead in the first set until 16-15. This was during a seven point string. Lay held a five point lead (10-5). The two players lost track of the point totals when the net became dislodged. Liang rang up 12 smashes in the first set, seven of which came on Lay’s serve, usually on the sixth stroke. The second set quickly moved in Liang’s direction with an 8-1 start. The set was competitive at 10-7 when Liang strung together another mega-run of eight straight points, seven of which came on winners.

Category

LIANG

LAY

Side out

7/16-.438

8/16-.500

Longest side out string

2

2

3+ Runs

5

2

Longest point string

8

3

SERVING

Service points

26

12

Serving %

0.975

100.0

Point generated off serve

.619

.444

POINTS

Overall points

42

27

Points after 11

24

8

Points after own errors

5/9-.556

2/8-.250

STROKES

Strokes

203

103

Strokes per point

4.833

3.815

5+ rallies

19

7

2- rallies

10

9

WINNERS

34

18

Aces

1

0

Blocks

0

0

Clears

5

3

Drives

3

3

Drops

3

3

Soft drives

1

5

Smashes

21

4

ERRORS

9

8

Deep

3

0

Net

4

2

Wide

1

6

Serve

1

0

W:E Ratio

3.778

2.25

Margin

8.00

Set Point %

2/3-.667

Time

16:54.56

[2,5
ST.
