FOUR\u00a0 GAMES FROM ROCHESTER<\/strong><\/p>\n

The only section action in the volleyball sections on Saturday was at the Mayo Civic Arena in Rochester with the 1AA & 1A subsection semifinals. The top two seeds in each side prevailed. With two simultaneous games going on separated by a mesh net I had to choose which games to chart. With the default operation tilting to the higher ranked QRF team that I have not charted yet it was one 1A and three 1AA contests. I just finished Stewartville last week, the #1 seed in 1AA East, so that meant it was #1 seed Mabel-Canton in the only 1A action. The day started and ended with sweeps with a tight middle. That goes for the two matches in the middle and the second sets of the sweeps as well.<\/p>\n

As a side note there is no chance that I will see the top 10 teams this year much less the top 20 or 40. #4 Shakopee was knocked off by giant slayer Chaska, the #8 seed in 2AAA on Friday night. Chaska is used to bumping off high seeds. They beat #1A Mayer Lutheran and #1AA Stewartville last weekend at Chaska. For the season I have seen five of the top 10QRF, and eight of the top 20QRF—–Kasson-Mantorville being one crossed off the top 20 yesterday.<\/p>\n

The reason this is a day late is I had to crash.<\/p>\n

MABEL-CANTON 3, FILLMORE CENTRAL 0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-19)<\/strong><\/p>\n

#1 East seed Mabel-Canton swept #4 Fillmore Central. The Cougars were tested in set two keeping with the theme of the day of the \u2018sandwich.\u2019 In set one MC blew open a back and forth contest with a 12-2 run over the course of three services and erasing an 8-7 FC lead. The Falcons tried to stop the momentum using both their time outs. MC tacked on two more after the second time out (19-10). FC had a last gasp in the opening set with a 6-2 push (21-16) before Avery Davis ended the threat with a side out kill on the first ball. Davis is back after a knee injury in limited front row action. MC was in control in the second up 12-6 with one FC time out already spent. Things got more competitive as FC went on a 9-3 run tying the set at 15 and forcing MC\u2019s only time out of the match. Both teams traded side outs with Kenedi McCabe smacking down an overpass to break the pattern. That one point cushion expanded to 23-20 and the last FC time out. After a missed serve the Falcons sliced another point off the deficit with an MC hitting error (23-22). Side outs prevailed the rest of the set. It seemed like a mirror to start the third: MC led 12-6 with FC having spent one time out. Two differences in this set: MC increased their earned point totals with Payton Danielson, the leading point scorer on the match, knocking down five kills in the third; and MC cut their give aways from a dozen to seven. The closest FC got was four (20-16). A pair of FC hitting errors left them staring at a six point gap.<\/p>\n

MC will next face #2 seed Caledonia for the right to face the West division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

LAKE CITY 3, LEWISTON-ALTURA 2 (25-11, 23-25, 26-24, 19-25, 15-5)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Keeping with the theme of tight middles, the three sets in the middle of the only five set match I charted on the day proved to the most dramatic in the day. Twice teams had the lead at 23 only see the other side prevail. LC let set two slip from their grasp giving hope to former A team Lewiston-Altura. LA saw their third set advantage disappear giving the Tigers renewed hope.<\/p>\n

The first set was dominated by Lake City with three massive runs of six, four and another six. Leading scorer Delaney Issendorf provided five kills in the opening set. LA only earned four points, all on first swing kills. In set two LC held a 17-15 lead when a run of five put LA up 20-17. Three of the points in that run came on LC errors. It also forced an LC time out. The Tigers had one more run in them with Grace Bany coming up with two kills in a three point surge to retake the lead at 23-22. LA called time and Tanner Reed delivered a kill to get the ball back in transition. A block by MaKayla Brown followed by an ace (or foot violation depending on your preference) by Kylee Kreidermacher tied the match for the Cardinals. Issendorf erupted for nine kills in set three, including two after LA had a 23-21 lead (also the set winner). LA enjoyed a 16-9 lead when LC went on an unanswered ten point run, the largest run of the day. LA righted the ship with a 7-2 surge (23-21) setting up the late set drama. LA held off set point once at 24-23. A missed serve gave LC another set point opportunity and Issendorf did not let the opportunity go. Despite the sour ending in set three, LA stormed out with the first four points of the fourth set. LC did fight back and led 9-8 but it did not last as LA scored the next four points (12-9). The Cardinals would not trail again in this set. LC didn\u2019t call their first until trailing 19-15. The comeback magic of the second and third sets did not reappear in set four. LC cut the deficit to 20-18 but they could not hold that momentum. Tanner Reed ended the set with a kill. LC won serve in the fifth and LA elected to stay where they were. It was LC that jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead after two serves and it was thanks to four LA hitting errors. LC didn\u2019t give away a point and Hannah LaBonte ended the match with a block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

KASSON-MANTORVILLE 3, TRITON 1 (25-10, 25-13, 23-25, 25-16)<\/strong><\/p>\n

On October first KM swept the Cobras at home. It looked like history was to repeat itself after the first two convincing sets. KM led 15-3 and 15-7 in sets one and two. But Triton\u2019s offense came to life in the third set led by senior middle Isabel Valdez\u2019s five kills, all first swings. The odd thing about the third set was the Komets out earned Triton 21-17. Triton grabbed a 5-1 lead in that set and never relinquished it. After three straight missed KM serves put the Cobras up 23-19, the errors stopped and they narrowed the deficit to 23-22 after two straight kills by Addison Bzoskie. It was two side out kills by Valdez that prolonged the match. Triton carried that momentum into set four with a 7-5 lead. Bzoskie, who had all five kills in the final set on first swings (eleven kills in the final two sets) turned the tables for KM. Triton called time at 9-7. Another four point run put the Komets safely in front 13-8 forcing Triton to play catch up the rest of the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

CANNON FALLS 3, BYRON 0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-11)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The #2 seed Bombers beat #3 seed Byron for the second time this year. Early in September CF won in four. They shaved a set off that on Saturday. The only time the Bombers trailed in any sets came in set two, again the \u2018sandwich\u2019 set. CF overcame a 22-21 deficit to squeeze out four of the last five points to seal the second set victory. That turnaround spoiled the efforts of Sacia Vanderpool who provided the Bears with eight kills in the second set. After her eighth kill tied it at 23, CF took their last time out. A hitting error set up the final drama. An overpass kill by Halle Hustad closed the set. Byron was forced to call time in the third down 9-3 and 19-8. An avalanche of errors contributed to their demise. After the 19-8 time out CF was the recipient of five straight hitting errors (24-8). Byron held off the inevitable three times before a missed serve, their twelfth give away that set ended the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
