The two are in a pairing arrangement for two years. This marks the second day in a row with a new twist. Yesterday it was North St. Paul, today Prior Lake on the other end of the metro. The Lakers have one player with the Blaze—Jasmine Tran at fourth singles. This was Central’s first outing of the year. The Blaze had two games under their belt. In the eight single sets Burnsville outperformed Central by double digit margins six times. The doubles were more competitive with Central’s only set win coming in set one of first doubles. There were two sets in doubles that went to extra points and each squad picking up one victory.

SINGLES
1. Maddie Blackbourn, B def Zadie H 21-14, 24-20
2. The second set proved to be closer, with extra points needed—or were they needed. My charts had the game over at 21-18, but the game continued. Somewhere along the line the score count was adjusted. Blackbourn was better at the side out game (.739) and delivered more winners (25-14). A trio of shots led her winners with seven each for clears, soft drives and smashes. Both players had 20 errors on the night. Zadie had issues serving with seven missed serves—all deep or wide.

The first set opened with a Blackbourn run of three, all on winners. Both players traded side outs the next eight points. Another Blackbourn run of four gave her a 12-5 lead. The rest of the set tightened up with Zadie getting her only run of three in the first set to make it 16-11. She further sliced a point off the deficit. Blackbourn closed with three straight points, the last two coming on clears.

Zadie had two leads in the game, and that came on the first point in set two, and again at 4-3. Blackbourn strung together five straight points to get a cushion at 8-4. Another run of four pushed the lead to 19-12. This could have been where the score went off the rails. Zadie, with her back to the wall, then put together the longest string of the match with six straight points. All six were errors on Blackbourn’s part including a 12 stroke wide. I thought it was over at 21-18, but the game continued for five more points. The contest ended on a three stroke clear by Blackbourn.

x

Category

BLACKBOURN

ZADIE H

Side out

17/23-.739

14/25-.560

Longest side out string

8

4 (2x)

3+ Runs

6

2

Longest point string

5

6

SERVING

Service points

22

11

Serving %

43/45-.956

27/34-.794

POINTS

Overall points

45

34

Points after 11

23

21

Points after own errors

12

9

STROKES

Strokes

166

153

Strokes per point

3.689

4.500

5+ rallies

15

14

2- rallies

13

11

WINNERS

25

14

Aces

0

1

Blocks

0

0

Clears

7

4

Drives

1

2

Drops

3

2

Soft drives

7

3

Smashes

7

2

ERRORS

20

20

Deep

4

3

Net

8

5

Wide

5

5

Serve

2

7

W:E Ratio

1.25

0.70

Largest margin

8 (1s)

1 (2s)

Margin

5.50

Set Point %

2/2-1.000

Time

19:07

BURNSVILLE 7, ST.
