The Eagles kept the Cougars at bay with margins of 9 in singles and 9.67 in doubles. In remarkable consistency in doubles the combined first set totals and second set totals mirrored each other. The closest sets were five points (21-16) in the first set of third singles and the first set of second doubles. The widest margin came in the second set of second singles with 17. Speaking of points—-another counting error cropped up. This time it was one point too few in the second set of first singles.

This also marks a completion of all the teams in the St. Paul Conference, an early record since it is still March. No Foolin.’ That is tomorrow.

A side note—the first polls will be out on Sunday.

SINGLES
1. Four points were decided by ten or more strokes. In that situation Cinderella Nwe won 3-1. Nwe also won the short game as well going 6-2 on one stroke points. Nwe did lead in winners 20-12 with a combination of seven soft drives and six smashes leading the way. Three of her smashes came on two stroke points. Lee’s most prolific winner came on clears with four. One factor in the win by Cinderella was her use of the block. Several times she kept the bird alive on a smash attempt by Lee. Cinderella did pick up one point on a block.

Nwe opened the match with the first four points. Lee responded with her own run of three two services later to cut the margin to 5-4. But Lee did not slam the door on side outs with Nwe picking up two straight runs on her next two services. Nwe led 12-5 at that stage. Lee had two more runs to make it a contest at 13-11. That was the last time she scored. Nwe wrapped the first set in a neat bow with the last eight points. Seven on Lee hitting errors.

Lee’s only lead of the night came on the first point of the second set, which also happened to be the longest point of the match, a 12 stroke smash. On Nwe’s third service of the second set she added seven more points to her totals to make it 10-2. It then grew to 16-4. Lee regained some momentum after that outscoring Nwe 8-4. As has been true in other matches this year, the second set had a miscalculation. This time the match ended one point short (20-12).

Category

NWE

<td
