There was a division in each of the venues. CPA took the top two spots in singles and the first doubles, while HCPA secured the last two events in both singles and doubles. The Warriors also won the only matches that went to three sets. How close was this match? A change of two points would have given the host Tigers the 4-3 win; six points and CPA would have won 5-2; nine points and it would be 6-1 CPA. Six sets were decided by two points, two of those to extra points. HCPA won the extra point sets. Both teams split the close margin sets 3-3. Doubles proved to be the tightest with CPA outpointing HCPA by three despite losing two of the matches.

SINGLES
1. Shina, CPA def Cassus 21-19, 21-16
2. She used that momentum and kept Cassus from generating any momentum holding her to only three runs the entire night. The winners tipped toward Shina (+8) with 11 ending up as smashes.

Set one saw 10 lead changes. The back and forth nature of this contest was established early with Shina finally breaking free with her first run of four helping her to a 12-9 lead. Two three stroke smashes helped that cause. Cassus bounced right back with a four point run of her own. The drive was instrumental in her surge with a 13 stroker helping on the second point in that sequence. It also put Cassus in front 13-12. Shina’s second run of four put her back in front 17-14. It seemed that four was the magic number of runs because Cassus jumped back in front 19-18 after four straight. Cassus did better in the longer stroke rallies in the match and she was on the verge of victory after an eight stroke error on a clear attempt. Shina tied it up with a four stroke smash. She had set point available after a three stroke smash.

Shina quickly established control in the second set with a three point run to lead 4-1. That was capped by an ace (or fan depending on how you stat it—some aces are no gos, this was a swing and a miss). Cassus got her only run in the second set right after to tie it at four. Neither player was able to get free. Shina shined late with her second run of three giving her a 17-14 advantage. Another run of three gave her match point on a nine stroke clear that had some dramatic twists in the rally. A six stroke Cassus clear held up the eventual Shina win. The CPA Tiger ended it on a two stroke drive.

Category

SHINA

<td
