I originally made my way to North to chart this contest (10 minutes before the first set was to begin). After seeing one net in the gym and talking to the athletic director we found out the Polars were on the southside. My travel time pushed me to 4:15. I figured I would see round two. I was able to access the building thanks to former Henry AD, and current South AP Maxey who was exiting when I was entering. When I got to the gym the teams were lined up for the first game introductions. I did not miss a thing. Timing is everything.

North was able to garner won set win and that was performed by Asiah Bankhead in the second set of first singles (see below). The next narrowest set was a three point win at third doubles in the first set.

Even though it was a double header, North was down 2-0 at the start of each match because of illness/absences. Both forfeits came at singles.

This now completes my Minneapolis charting.

SINGLES
1. Anna, S def Asiah Bankhead 21-14, 13-21, 21-8
2. Anna did not allow Asiah that many runs—about one per set, while averaging at least two per set, more in the wins. She was +17 in winners too. A strange fact in this match—neither player had a smash for a winner. Anna’s favorite was the drive with ten. Asiah’s favorite was clears at six. Neither had a lot of two stroke winners. But Anna did have eight three stroke winners in the third set alone showing that she had a counter to the receive. Those eight winners were part of a sweet 16 total in that set.

Set one was tight with Asiah up 12-11 when the dam burst for Anna. After a clear for side out she nailed eight more points, the longest run of the day. Three of those points came on three stroke winners including the final two as drops. At some point the counting was off. It happened around the 11 point mark. That is why I have 22 points for Anna in this set.

Asiah jumped off to a 6-1 lead but soon saw that lead vanish like the leftover snow when the temps hit 80. Anna rang up six straight to take a 7-6 lead. But Asiah was able to build two more runs in this set, her only set with runs. Her third run was six additional points for a 17-8 lead. In this set Anna’s serve was off four times. That is how Asiah’s final run started.

The third set was competitive with Asiah up 5-4. Then Anna came to life with another mega run, this time eight straight points for a 12-5 lead. Anna also slammed the door on any ideas Asiah had of a comeback with three consecutive side outs on Asiah’s serve. Anna closed out the match with the final six points capped by a short serve ace.

Category

<td
