This was the third road trip this season for Henry and the trip sometimes gets delayed. That was the case today. The match was to start at four. The bus left Henry at 4:05. Hard to make the start of the game at South if your bus leaves five minutes after the start. Then there were more delays. The first singles and second singles were mixed up. How was this discovered? I thought I was charting first singles. But Shamyra Melton was warming up with South’s second singles Luci. Things were quickly changed.

Once the results were in Henry had the 5-2 win with only second singles and first doubles going to the Tigers. First doubles was the only match that went three sets with the South pair of Isabel and Nina bouncing back after a 21-19 loss in the second set. Henry won two sets at 21-19. The other came at fourth singles in the first set. The rest of the doubles were double digit set wins for the Patriots.

With charting these two teams I now have seven left to go.

SINGLES

Shamyra Melton, H def Ina 21-7, 21-18

Luci, S def Porsona Ya 21-10, 21-14

Shayla Thao, H def Farisa 21-17, 21-14

Chouaman Yang, H def Cora 21-19, 21-13

DOUBLES

Isabel / Nina, S def Aniya / Aleena 21-16, 19-21, 21-16

McKayla / Lillian, H def Muniratu / Jimena 21-9, 21-6

Arne / Diana, H def Audrey / Mamie 21-6, 21-5

BY THE NUMBERS
SINGLES
Matches: Henry 3-1 .750
Games: Henry 6-2 .750
points: Henry 150-130 .536
Set 1 points: Henry 73-64 .533
Set 2 points: Henry 77-66 .538
decided by 10+: tied 1-1 .500
decided by 3-: Henry 2-0 1.000
margin: Henry 2.50
DOUBLES
Matches: Henry 2-1 .667
Games: Henry 5-2 .714
points: Henry 137-87 .612
Set 1 points: Henry 58-36 .612
Set 2 points: Henry 36-30 .617
Set 3 points: South 21-16 .568
decided by 10+: Henry 4-0 1.000
decided by 3-: Henry 1-0 1.000
margin: Henry 7.143

FIRST SINGLES

Shamyra MELTON 2, Ina 0 (21-7, 21-18)

Henry’s Shamyra Melton took two sets off Ina at first singles with a big first set margin and a confusing tighter second set. Confusing in that there were a couple of points that needed video review (which doesn’t exist). Also, the scores were off a bit and on top of that questions on where to serve were endemic. All those issues did not distract from the performances. Melton is long and got several shoestring saves during the match. In the first set on the eleventh point Melton went to her right, did the splits on the reach and the bird found the floor with extra effort. In that first set Melton had a run on every service and she only allowed one run on Ina’s fifth service.

The second set was not as clean for Melton. The split may have triggered a hamstring issue. She was still able to move, but the errors piled up from two to nine in the second frame. Her winners stayed even. The side out score was not as tight as in the first set. Ina opened the second set with six straight points. Melton did not take her first lead in the second set until her third service where she rattled off six straight. Ina moved back in front with a run of six on her fifth service (16-14). A pair of soft drives that Melton reached in the first set dropped in this frame. Ina’s last lead (according to my stats) was 17-16. A net error put the bird back in Melton’s hands and she got three more points capped by a five-stroke smash. But that was game even though I had 20-17.

Category

MELTON

<td
