EAGLE RIDGE 4, PRAIRIE SEEDS 3<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today was Eagle Ridge\u2019s first contest of the season and they hosted Prairie Seeds. The Gryphons opened with a victory taking all singles matches while the Lycans swept the doubles. You might notice that the fourth singles and third doubles were played to only one set. That is because they originally were slotted as JV matches. Once it was pointed out that varsity matches consisted of four singles and three doubles.<\/p>\n

There were two three set matches including first singles and second doubles. The second set of second doubles was the only set that went to extra points. That proved to be the tightest contest of the day which was decided by four points. Only one other set was separated by two points, the sole set at fourth singles.<\/p>\n

After today I have seen 23 teams with five more to go.<\/p>\n

      Joshna opened her season with a three-set win over Diana Moua. This was the only three setter in singles. Joshna started off slowly. Moua held her without a run in the first set. But in the last two sets Joshna ripped off seven while holding Moua to two. This was an even stat card, but the sets were wide ranging. Joshna led with winners slightly 25-22. The most glaring stat was Moua\u2019s hitting errors with 22 finding their way into the net. That was one less than Joshna\u2019s entire error total.<\/p>\n

      My scores were not quite the same. In the last set I had the score 20-11.<\/p>\n

      That doesn\u2019t explain the first set which was even more off\u202623-15 for Moua. But this miscounting has been going on all season. It is a rare occurrence when the scores actually align.<\/p>\n

      Moua got the first run in the first set on her second service and never trailed after that in the set. Her second run of five broke a 13 all tie and created space between the two. Both players favored the drive in this set with four winners apiece.<\/p>\n

      Joshna got her first run of the day with the first three points of the second set. The big separation came on her fifth service with a six-point burst that carried her out to a 13-4 lead. Showcasing the earned ratio, it was four winners to nine errors for the 13 total.<\/p>\n

      The deciding third set went to Joshna after two consecutive runs on her fourth and fifth service. The eight-point run on service five was the back breaker. That started with a side out on a four-point drop and then a nine stroke drop on the next point. Joshna added back-to-back smashes in that run.<\/p>\n

      Joshna is an eighth grader.<\/p>\n
