Some upsets took place in team and individual play showcasing tight races across the board as we head for May. There are still a handful of unbeaten singles players, but the chances are high that whoever wins the title will have at least one loss.

The big news this week is that the team portion of the state tournament will have every team will be able to take part if they choose to. Theoretically all 28 teams will be involved. This is a turn around from the 16 team tournament that was limited from the pandemic era and is a return to life before that era. The first round will take Monday, May 13 at the lower seed (for example at 8 and not at 25). The winners of Monday’s games will head to one of four sites—the top four teams automatically receive byes—for a potential of two matches on May 14. The winners at those four sites move to Edina for Wednesday’s semifinals and championship / third place round (May 15). Then Thursday, May 16, the singles and doubles championships will be decided again at Edina. Each school will send a pair of singles and doubles (or less if they choose). Action that day will start at 4:15 to 4:30 and the champions should be crowned by 9:30. Last year there was 101 matches, roughly the same amount of matches that took place in the Edina Invitational earlier in April. The difference at state will be one & done, no second lifes.

I am at 25 teams charted or 89%. Three teams remain: Burnsville, Fridley and Hiawatha.

This week: A triangular on Wednesday at Burnsville features three of the top five singles players: Phlower Vang, Tenzin Tsephel, and Jasmine Tran. Key doubles matchups include Washington v Harding on Tuesday; Highland Park v Johnson on Thursday. HP’s doubles will also take on Edina in the Wednesday triangular. Roosevelt travels to Henry for a match that may decide the Minneapolis conference race. The St. Paul race is still up in the air with four teams with six wins or more, and another with four wins within striking distance. Every match there is huge.
