This was their second match of the year and Henry won the first contest at the Teddies home.

How narrow was this win? The margins at both singles and doubles were under two points each. The Teddies built their victory by splitting the singles and taking the odd doubles. Critical matches went three sets at fourth singles and third doubles and both went to Roosevelt with both third sets going 21-19. A flip of both scores would have meant a Patriots victory at 5-2.

Next year Henry will be known as Camden. This match was unique on two fronts—both involving rallies. There were 40 rallies that last five strokes or more, and nine that were mega-rallies of ten strokes or more. Sophia had command of these longer rallies, winning eight. Compounding that was the dearth of fast points (two strokes or less). Combined there were only seven. The other facet that jumped out was the winner totals. Sophia had 19 smashes that went for winners, 13 in the first set alone. And that was one less than Melton garnered all match. The other oddity was the lack of a side out game by either. The longest string of consecutive side outs Sophia had was only one. She did prevent any Melton run in set one on the other hand.

Sophia opened the match with two straight runs on her way to an 8-2 lead. Her third run on her fourth service pushed the lead to 14-5. At this stage Sophia had nine smashes. At the end of the set she had another smash string of three straight.

The score of the first set was off by some margin. I had 22-12, a difference of four points. I don’t know when it happened.

The second set was much tighter with a few more services for each player. Melton got the first run to pull out to a 4-1 advantage. The back and forth nature of this match had Melton up 14-13 after her third run. That is when Sophia pieced together a six point run that gave her some breathing room at 19-14. The first four points on that run were all via hitting errors. Melton had one last gasp with a run of three to close to 19-17. A six stroke drop, one of two for Sophia on the day, broke the momentum.

Category

<td
