After watching the video and coding, tabulating the results (and then some) the three matches from the Burnsville triangular are finally ready to be released. Just like the first singles, the first doubles featured three of the top six teams (at the time). The Edina pair of Ivy Peterson and Sanna Coma, the #1 ranked team, won both their matches and in the process only allowed a high of 14 points in one of the sets. Two of their sets they held their opponents to single digits. The Burnsville duo (then #6) of Katelin Murray and Natalie Portwood split on the day. The #5 team (at the time) of Adi Damiyo and Bety Shiferaw from Highland Park did not win a set.<\/p>\n

GAME 1: EDINA V BURNSVILLE 21-7, 21-11<\/strong><\/p>\n

Edina held Burnsville to no service points in the first set and only permitted two Blaze service points in the second set. Peterson & Coma combined for 21 winners to only 7 for the Blaze. While Burnsville was shut out in the first set, the Hornets were able to squeeze at least one point off thir first four services.<\/p>\n

One feature of doubles is longer rallies, and a shortage of the quick points found in singles. Rallies lasting five strokes or longer accounted for 29 of the points, the quick points only 5. The longest rally in the first set lasted 26 strokes, which was eventually won by Edina on a hitting error that went wide.<\/p>\n

Edina scored the first five points in the second set. Burnsville was more competitive in this set, closing to 10-7. But Burnsville was still unable to generate any runs. Edina had three. It was run number two that gave some separation at 14-8. It was run number three that put them on the cusp at 19-11. The odd thing is in both sets, Burnsville\u2019s last serve was a missed serve short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Edina had 86 upper shots to 67 for Burnsville, a difference of 19. Lower shots were flipped around 55 for the Blaze, 29 for the Hornets—an even bigger advantage for Edina of 26. Shots on the left side also favored Edina (considering less is better) with 34 to 54 another 19 difference. All combined winners for both teams were uppers 31, mid 10, lower 6. It would behoove teams to keep the bird flat, do not let opponents get a whiff of hope with a bird hanging juicily up in the air. It would also be a strategy to send the bird to the left side of their opponents every chance they get. Only 13 winners combined came from the left side.<\/p>\n

GAME 2: EDINA V HIGHLAND PARK 21-9, 21-14<\/strong><\/p>\n

Edina again put the clamps on their opponents side out game holding the Scots scoreless on the first four services. By the time HP scored on serve the Hornets were up 14-3. Another long rally went to Edina. This time it was a 31 stroke drive off Peterson for a 17-7 lead. More d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu? HP missed their last two services in set one.<\/p>\n

Set two the Scots pushed out in front 4-1. Edina took control of the set with a massive run of eight, the longest of the day, to pull in front 12-5. HP wasn\u2019t done yet. They cut the deficit to 15-14. But then their scoring stopped. The Hornets rattled off the last seven points.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>GAME 3: BURNSVILLE V HIGHLAND PARK 21-19, 22-10<\/strong><\/p>\n

The closest match of the day came in the first set here with the host Blaze holding firm for a two-point win. HP had the first run of the day and led 7-2 early in the first. Five straight points by Burnsville put them in front 8-7. Holding HP scoreless on four of their services while squeezing two points off four services gave a cushion of 14-11. A late run of three cut the margin to 19-18. Then it was trading off side outs three straight times.<\/p>\n

Burnsville tallied three runs while holding HP without a point on four services to get an 11-4 lead. HP was unable to get a run in this set. The Blaze had a 19-10 lead when a conversation\/ discussion that involved coaches came forward. Unable to decipher what the conversation was about, I guessed that it was about scoring.
