This was their second meeting this season and both were Mitchell victories. Today Mitchell took advantage of 23 hitting errors including seven missed Larson serves. The last three service attempts by Larson were deep (twice) and wide. The two have somewhat contrasting styles, Mitchell is more power, Larson was looking to exploit the soft drive shot. Mitchell ended up with nine kills, the best winner category for either player. Larson was shut out in that category.

Both players advanced with three two set wins. Larson had two sets in the six played before the title match that were within three points. Mitchell’s closest set all day came in the opener against Lily of Washburn at 16. She held opponents to single digits three times, including Larson once.

Mitchell blew open set one with nine straight points to build an impressive 18-5 lead. Mitchell’s stifling side out game kept Larson staring at a goose egg for runs.

In set two Mitchell scored the first three points and kept up the pressure. After her third run her lead was 19-8. A late 5-2 run (missed serves on both the Mitchell points) somewhat narrowed the gap and held off the inevitable for a moment.

In case you are wondering, the 1978 Roosevelt singles champ was Linda Wilcox. She now has company.

I unfortunately missed the first few points in this match. Not enough to change the narrative.

Category

MITCHELL

<td
