The game I chose had the earmarks of a competitive match up—a #4 vs #5 in the then AAAA polls which mirrored the seeds in the last AAAA title game which was decided on a last second sideline out of bounds play. This game was not that game. This was the widest differential of the five options I had. The Crimson ran over visiting Lakeville North 71-52 keeping the Panthers searching for their first win of the new season.

MG established what they wanted to do early. Multiple players got the ball inside and they converted their two points shots to the tune of 62.5%. But it was the start of the second half that broke LN’s backs as the Crimson scored the first seven times they touched the ball turning a 34-26 halftime lead to a 49-28 comfortable margin. At the widest MG led 70-46 with under three minutes left. By that time the deep bench was on the floor for both squads.

Everyway MG had the stat advantage: 29 rebounds to only 20 (it is hard to rebound made baskets); a plus +11 in turnovers. MG forced a turnover ever 15.39 touches compared to the 28.25 by LN. Not only that metric on defense, but the shot selection, where & when, and execution had the Crimson in the pink.

Balance was a theme last week when I charted MG vs. Wayzata. MG had more of it, not only on the launch of their shots, but with their line up scoring as well. Michigan State bound Jordan Ode delivered 27 points with a 39 score in the 31 Club. The rest of her starting group scored 12-10-9-7. The top three scorers for LN equaled Ode’s 27 (10-10-7). The score was 19 but it was more severe than that. Just measuring starters, it was MG 65-35 or translated 127.5-72.9. MG was almost pure gold at the line going 10/11. LN was 7/12. LN had an advantage with traditional post personnel, but it was MG that led in touches in the paint 58-53. Other than Ojulu and Wilson the Panther starters only had nine additional touches. But the problem was the drift, the lack of squaring up, and the fades that hampered LN’s shooting percentage. MG found a way to get the ball in whether on the drive or on entry passes. LN did have the advantage behind the arc with six 3s, two by 8th grade guard Nivaya Koles during the deep bench portion of the game.

DAY AHEAD

There are eight Wednesday games, all metro based.

#1AAAA Hopkins heads to Eastview.

Byron travels to #1AAA Benilde-St. Margaret’s.

High Fives, Parades and busy Tuesday HS results plus Maple Grove & Lakeville North recap.
