With unblemished marks the stakes were high. The Magic separated themselves from the visitors breaking free from an 18 all tie with a 16-4 run over the course of six minutes in the first half making it 34-22 with 3:12 to go. That proved to be the difference. During that stretch Delano had droughts of five and four, while Monti had a run of four right before the Tiger time out. That 8-0 surge was the exclamation point. The Magic went into half with a 37-26 lead.

Delano wasn’t through competing. They narrowed the margin to 62-57 with 1:28 remaining. Voll proceeded to convert six straight free throws on the next three Monticello possessions preserving the victory.

The two teams were fairly similar in the stat category. The Magic was better pp100-wise 103.0 to 88.1. Of the four factors it was rebounding that provided the Magic the best boost at 38-29 with an offensive board ratio of 15/31-or 48.4%; while Delano was at 13/36 or 36.1%. Monti’s zone defense also a factor. It stymied the flow of Delano’s offensive attack. Many possessions were late in the count. You can see that in the touches per play. In plays lasting seven or more touches Monticello was 4/9 44%; Delano was 23/58 or 39.7. The Tigers were not getting great looks. In plays of three touches or less Monticello was 18/40-45%; Delano 11/26-42.3%.

Samantha Voll was the focal point of the Delano D. She led all scorers with 27 points with a 112.5 pp100 and she joined the 41 Club with one to spare. What makes Voll effect is her ability to change/hesitate momentarily on the dribble which relaxes the defense. Voll then exploits the new space available and either scores or gets closer to the rim drawing a defender thereby opening up another Magic player.

Cassie Wegman led the way for the Tigers with 24 points, with ten coming at the free throw line. Abbie Pietila added 18, nine from behind the arc. Both made the 31 Club with 34 and 32 respectively.

DAY AHEAD

There are ten games on tap today: A pair of Metro East AAA ranked teams in action

#1AAA Benilde-St. Margaret’s at #4AAA Hill-Murray

Simley at #5AAA Mahtomedi

Busy Tuesday (at least at the high school level) with D1 High Five, 30 Point Paraders, Ranked results, the day ahead plus a review of Monticello and Delano.
