Saturday’s victim was Winona Cotter. On Thursday it was Dover-Eyota to the tune of 91-47. Both TRC teams are in the mix for one of the top four spots in what usually is a competitive section 1AA tournament. With these Lion victories it shows the separation between the clear #1 and the rest of the state.

Last night’s game had some similarities and differences with Saturday’s event. The Providence defense crated havoc with 29 turnovers or one every 11.17 touches. That led to more field goal attempts and easy field goal attempts for Providence. They attempted 85 to 57 for DE. Not only was the attempts substantially different, so was the percentages. DE was held to only two 2FGA in the first half and then only shot 8% in doing so. Providence shot 48.6%. Again the Lions roared from 3s with each starter contributing at least one on the way to a dozen. DE did have a big advantage at the free throw line with 21 attempts to only eight. Compared to Saturday, Providence “cooled” off if 109.6 pp100 can be considered “cool.” That was down from the scorching 132.9 on Saturday. The defensive pp100 numbers were pretty similar to Saturday’s with a slight uptick to 57.3 from 54.5 on the seventh.

A big difference was the actual game flow. With a RT game you would expect it was off to the races on the opening tip. The game was a one possession game at 16-14 with the hosts ahead after a triple by #13 for DE. That prompted the first time out of the game and it was the Lions requesting it. There were 10:34 left to go in the first half. After that break Providence went on a tear. Four straight scores including the last two steals and lay ups by Greenway forced the Eagles to discuss the situation at 9:08 (24-14). Three minutes later DE needed another time out session with Providence gaining a 14-1 burst in the interim. That didn’t solve the situation either as the Lions continued their scoring streak out to a 51-19 halftime lead. Even if Providence didn’t score in the second half they had enough for victory. All told it was an avalanche of points for Providence 35-5. Providence again took a time out in the second half at the 13:36 mark after four straight possessions ending in turnovers. The score was still substantial at 63-25. The rest of the way Providence outscored the Eagles 27-22 as the benchs made their appearance. The Providence bench delivered 107.1 pp100, slightly behind the starters 110.1.

Maddyn Greenway once again led the charge for Providence with 26 points on her way to membership in the 41 Club. But….her pp100 were under 100, at 89.7, the only Lion under the century mark. Hope Counts joined Greenway in the 31 Club with a 38. Counts racked up an impressive 19 d stops. They were not all d boards. She is reading the game just like Greenway and snagged six steals to lead that category, one ahead of Greenway.

DAY AHEAD

There are 124 games today. Best options

Unbeaten & Ranked

#2AA Crosby-Ironton is at #10A Braham.

Ranked v Ranked

#8AAA Orono is at #4AAA Mahtomedi

#9AA Minnewaska at #5AA Sauk Centre

[10,7
Recap of Sunday Action 3.9.2025 D1 HIGH FIVE Paige Meyer, South Dakota State, Albany 26 Paige Bueckers, UConn, Hopkins 23 Madison Mathiowetz, South Dakota State, Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 20 Lauren Jensen, Creighton, Lakeville North 19 Taylor Janssen, Montana State, Rosemount 14 Tessa Johnson, South Carolina, St. Michael-Albertville 14 Totals:…
Sunday action at the D1 Level; an examination of pp100s of the Lake Conference; plus what is on tap for Monday.
