The word of the day was turnovers—-the Spartans’ wingspan created havoc for the Mahtomedi passing game which led to 37 turnovers. The Zephs in the first half were turning it over at the rate of one turnover with slightly under seven touches. That is fifth grade traveling country. The inability to negotiate the press, the lack of urgency on some passes, the lack of awareness on receivers parts, and the frozen stature of receivers when witnessing a teammate about to drown all contributed to the disaster. Orono then benefited from 26 more shots (71-45). Both teams delivered eight 3s and Mahtomedi actually went to the line at a higher rate 11-3 than the Spartans. But when you turn it over every 9.4 touches you are putting yourself in a steep hole.

The game didn’t start off this way. It was all golden for the hosts at the start with hosts scoring the first ten points. Grace Prose connected twice on 3s from each corner and added a lay up after grabbing a Orono miss. All this happened before four minutes had elapsed. Orono called time at the 14:49 mark and a different game began. Prose was then held to only two more points the rest of the contest. Partly was the focus of the Orono defense, partly it was Prose putting herself out of the game with a pair of offensive fouls in the first half. Her third foul (and second charge) came with 4:13 left in the half. By that stage Orono was on their way with a 27-22 lead. The back breaking shift came with four straight Mahtomedi turnovers turning an 18-10 lead into an 18 all tie. It was Orono’s turn to showcase their skill behind the arc as they moved to the ball to wide open looks. The Spartans closed the half up 34-26.

The second half began with Orono still in command of the tempo/pace. They stretched out their advantage to 50-33 and then the Zephyrs finally took a time out with 13:22 left in the game. By that time the barn door had been open for a good 18 minutes. But that time out did inspire a brief Zephyr resurgence cutting the deficit eventually to 54-45 with seven minutes left. It appeared that the game was going to continue to tighten up after three 3s. It seemed that is all Mahtomedi was searching for at that point. Orono caught their second wind and scored on five straight possessions effectively putting the game out of reach at 65-45 with 3:57 left.

The Spartans were led by sister duo Mya and Ally Moore. Mya scored 19 points and had a kjasr-style triple double with 16 d stops and 10 distributions. Her wingspan on defense almost came up one short of double digits with nine. Those stats piled up and led her to the 41 Club with a score of 45. Younger sister Ally was just shy of the 31 Club, one off. As for the team Orono’s pp100 checked in at a healthy 97.3 to Mahtomedi’s 68.

Orono lives in section 6AAA and the battle for that crown is going to be epic. I have not moved off the assertion that section is the roughest, toughest with Benilde, Delano and Holy Angels in the mix. Mahtomedi is looking forward to the days when Ella Frazier returns to the line up. The senior point guard was injured last season and is due to return in January. That should help in some of the ball handling/decision making snafus that plagued Mahtomedi on Friday the 13th.

DAY AHEAD

There are a Hank Aaron number of games scheduled today (44).

Maple River is hosting their showcase with eight games.

Best bets Ranked v Ranked

#2AAAA Maple Grove at #3AAA Alexandria

#8AA Duluth Marshall at #1AAA Benilde-St. Margaret’s

High One, 21 Paraders; Ranked Friday Results; the day ahead; and a review of Orono v Mahtomedi.
