The Spartans, behind 25 points from senior guard Desirai Chappell held off a late rally thanks to the fouls. It is true Fridley went to the line more often than Richfield (27-20), but the fouls count was more severe on the Tigers. Two key Tigers ended up on the bench preventing a full squad in the midst of their potential comeback. First to grab some pine was Brandi Washington at the 2:52 mark and then came Aubrey Cochran-Starr at 2:26. The score at that time was 68-59. Without their two leading scorers the climb was going to be much steeper.

Richfield on the night ended up a with a solid 102.7 pp100 to Fridley’s 86.5. The Spartans had a huge advantage on the glass with a plus 20 margin. Their offensive total % was 18/19 or 48.6%; while Fridley was as at 10/31 or 24.4%. Richfield shot better at 50% from 2s and 35% from 3s. Chappell got to the rim seemingly at will going 11/17 from 2s. She led Richfield in touches with 24.8%; of which 86.9% were off the bounce. Chappell did crack the 41 Club with one to spare. Fridley’s ACS was one away from the 41 Club and made a living at the free throw line going 11/13 (47.8% of her scoring). Fridley converted 41% from 2s, 23% from 3s. Chappell did not fall into the foul trap like her counterparts. She ended up with only one for the night.

Richfield established their lead at 13-7 early in the game. Fridley called time at 13:19 after four straight turnovers (soon to be five straight). At half it was 39-27 Spartans. Richfield stretched the lead out to 61-44 with 8:40 to go after three straight 3s, the last two by freshman Iona MacNabb. Fridley hung around with old fashioned &1 three point plays. ACS converted two in a row to cut the margin to 61-47. Fridley scored four straight times cutting the margin to 68-59. But both Washington & ACS were on the bench after fouling out thwarting any comeback. A bench tech at 1:29 soon added three points to the Richfield final score.

Richfield now is at 6-1 for the year. They are in a fight for what I expect will be a #5 seed in the loaded 6AAA section along with Bloomington Kennedy. Fridley sits at 2-3 for the season and they are looking to get a #4 seed in section 5AAA (home of Monticello & Totino-Grace).

DAY AHEAD

Eleven games mark Wednesday’s schedule.

Ranked teams in action

Eden Prairie at Lakeville South

St. Croix Lutheran Minnehaha

A recap of Tuesday action from 12.18.2024 with a Minnesota perspective.
