Both games had a tinge of intrigue with section seeding implications. In the first matchup it was Farmington over New Prague 65-61. Finally…I got to see a game that was close as opposed to the running time contests I saw to close the week before Christmas. It was also a chance to test out the “Clutch” stats the NBA uses. Their measure of “Clutch” is if the score is within five points in the last five minutes of a game. I used the last four minutes in this case because NBA games are a bit longer with 12-minute quarters leading to 48-minute games compared to 36 minutes for HS girls. But before the examination of clutch time let’s get to the how the game played out prior to that.

Farmington broke free from an eight all tie by scoring 13 unanswered points to make it 21-8 with about nine minutes left in the first half. The Trojans closed the gap to 27-26 six minutes later. Part of the problem for Farmington was fouls piling up and that took down point guard Gianna Carpentier. She picked up her second at the 8:46 mark. Number three came later in the first half at 3:11. Farmington still led at the half 33-28. NP did take a 41-40 lead after a 3 by Taylor Hemann which led to a Tiger timeout at 13:18. There were a couple of lead changes and ties, the last coming at 48 all. Bailey Garrahy nailed two straight 3s (one that tied the score at 48) and that put Farmington up to stay. That caused NP to call time at 6:13.

Examining the clutch performances, both teams did well. They both outperformed what they did during the game. Farmington ended the night at 95.7 pp100 but had a 133.0 down the stretch. New Prague’s game pp100 checked in at 88.4, but was even better than the Tigers at 144.0. The Trojans had the problem of making up a deficit. Taylor Hemann of NP scored nine of her 22 points in the last four minutes, all on field goals and scored on three straight possessions under one minute to go. Translation: a 180 pp100 down the stretch. Gianna Carpentier delivered seven points for the Tigers, with five coming at the free throw line. Translation: slightly under at 175 pp100. Carpentier ended up being in the 41 Club with a game high 29 points. Hemann missed out on the 31 Club by three. NP was led by Katie Boulanger with 26 points. But unfortunately for the Trojans she could not take part of clutch time because she fouled out with 5:22 left. The last two fouls came within 30 seconds of each other. In order to be a clutch performer, you have to be on the floor. Both times Ashley Harrison drew fouls for Farmington. Harrison had four points, also in clutch time, and had eight for the game.

Overall Farmington outrebounded the Trojans 49-36 with a whopping 26 offensive boards or a 54.2% clip. Normally a good offensive rebound score is in the high 30s%. Another big advantage for Farmington was their bench outscoring NP 15-1.

The second game saw the host Raiders leaving the Park-Cottage Grove Wolfpack howling 50-33. This was a section 3AAAA match up, but the problem for PCG was their post player Mesa Jameson was absent causing problems on both offensive and defensive ends of the floor for the Wolfpack. She is in Colorado at a volleyball event. She is their leading scorer according to the MNGBB Hub at 14.9 ppg. Hastings dominated the boards with a 51-26 advantage. They held PCG to only three offensive rebounds all day. The Raiders had a dozen points via second chancers.

Hastings looked to go inside frequently to Hailey Strain who established choice position close to the rim. That led to a game high of 15 points. During the first half PCG scored once in eleven possessions which put them in the hole at 24-11. It was 28-18 at half. Both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net to start the second half. After five minutes only PCG had tallied a trey. For the game the pp100s were both under 80 with Hastings getting 76.9 while PCG struggled to get to 52.4.

DAY AHEAD

Holiday Tournament closes out the weekend with 103 games.

Ranked v Ranked

#1AAAA Maple Grove v #3AAAA Hopkins

#6AAAA Eastview v #9AAAA Centennial

#5AAAA Wayzata v #7AAAA Prior Lake

#2AAA Alexandria #10AAA Rock Ridge

#9AAA Stewartville v #3AA Minnehaha

#2AA Crosby-Ironton v #1A Goodhue

#1AA Providence v #8AA Duluth Marshall

#9A Hancock #10A Cass Lake-Bena

Recap of MN GBB Friday action 12.27.2024.
